Fault Zone Structure & Mechanics Workshop

June 11 - 12, 2008

Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach
2101 Mandalay Beach Road, Oxnard, CA 93035 (Map)

SCEC researchers will gather for a two-day workshop to investigate the structure and formation of fault zones to better understand their role in the mechanics of individual earthquakes. The workshop will take place in Oxnard, California at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach, beginning mid-day on June 11th and ending by mid-day on June 12th. Presentations and discussions will focus on:

- The structure of fault zones
- The mechanics of shear localization within a cataclastic layer
- The particle size distribution of cataclastic rock within fault zones
- Mechanisms for the formation of fault zone rock
- The hydraulic properties of fault zones
- The mechanics of dynamic friction within a fault zone
- The interaction of dynamic rupture with off-fault damage
- The interaction of dynamic rupture with fault branches

Experts will include specialists familiar with the structure of exhumed fault zones, the mechanical properties of the cataclastic rock, and the formulation of dynamic rupture models in these complex structures. The goal is to identify synergies between the key topics in order to pinpoint areas that require further theoretical, laboratory, and field studies.

Attendance will be limited and by invitation only due to budgetary constraints. Contact Charlie Sammis for further details.
