SCEC Workshop on Detection of Anomolous Deformation Signals

August 12 - 13, 2008

Kellogg West Conference Center
3801 W. Temple Avenue, Pomona, CA 91768 (Map)

Southern California, like many seismically-active areas, is home to a large number of continuously recording GPS and other geodetic instruments. The steady stream of data provided by these networks requires ongoing monitoring for changes that may signal anomalous behavior. Although research has focused on various aspect identifying transients in geodetic data, a coordinated and comprehensive monitoring system is not in place in southern California. In response to this situation, SCEC is organizing a workshop designed to bring together a small group of experts on this topic as a first step toward fulfilling this need.

The goals of this workshop are to explore approaches for systematically searching the geodetic data for transient signals and to develop a plan by which SCEC can implement tools for doing so. The workshop will consist primarily of focused discussion to identify specific areas on which the research community should concentrate in order to develop robust monitoring systems and make them operational. Topical sessions devoted to the basis on which transients may be identified, appropriate means for evaluating the success of detection algorithms, and the practical implementation of a detection system using real-world data will provide a framework for discussion. Within each session the discussion will be informed by a brief presentation that summarizes ongoing efforts.

At the close of the workshop a list of recommendations will be compiled for the SCEC leadership summarizing 1) required features for a transient monitoring system, 2) approaches that have proven promising so far, and 3) tasks that must still be addressed in terms of algorithms, evaluation, and implementation in order to make these monitoring tools a reality for southern California.
