USGS Public Lecture Series presents "Real-time Forecasting of Tomorrow's Earthquakes" by Dr. Matt Gerstenberger, U.S. Geological Survey
What: USGS Public Lecture Series Topic: On Wednesday, February 9th at 8:00 PM the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pasadena Office will continue their free Public Lecture Series. The presentation, entitled "Real-time Forecasting of Tomorrow's Earthquakes" will be given by Dr. Matt Gerstenberger of the USGS Pasadena Office. After a large earthquake in California, the questions on everyone's minds are: "How many aftershocks will there be?" and "Is a big one coming next?". While we may not be able to answer these questions with absolute certainty, based on past observations of aftershocks we have a good idea of what to expect. By adding knowledge gained from past earthquake shaking to what we know of the expected number of aftershocks, we are now able to create maps of the chance of experiencing damaging shaking from these aftershocks. By continually monitoring earthquakes as they happen, we update the shaking maps every hour and display them on-line. Come and find out more about this cutting edge technology and how it can help keep you and your family updated on your earthquake hazard! All lectures are free and begin at 8 PM in Beckman Institute Auditorium on the Caltech campus in Pasadena. There is plenty of free parking available. For more information see http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/info/lectures/ or call 626-583-6801. *Please note-The Beckman Institute Auditorium is NOT the same as the Beckman Institute. Please visit our lecture website listed above to view a map of the campus. Thank you. |
