CHANGES TO SEISMIC SLEUTHS

National Science Education Standards

The original Seismic Sleuths package was printed before the National Science Education Standards were finalized in 1995. To bring Seismic Sleuths up-to-date, each section has been re-evaluated in terms of the current standards.

Earthquake Information Resources

Each unit of Seismic Sleuths includes a listing of print and non-print media resources for teachers and students. These lists have been updated to include new publications and internet resources. ISBN numbers and purchasing information has also been added to make locating the resources easier.

A listing of USGS, FEMA, and state geological survey offices has been checked for accuracy and updated to reflect new contact information.

Scanning Seismic Sleuths into Digital Format

To assist with editing, the entire Seismic Sleuths curriculum has been scanned into digital format using Textbridge Pro, an optical character recognition program. The digital version will eventually be used to create a web-based curriculum.

Reorganization of Sections

Originally, Seismic Sleuths was designed to be primarily used in sequence and as a whole. To aid teachers who only wish to use part of the curriculum or who are short on time, Seismic Sleuths has been re-vamped to make each unit a stand-alone module. The sections have also been reorganized into 5 units instead of the original 6.

Each unit has been streamlined so that each section may be completed within a standard class period. Material removed from the main units has been place in an Additional Resources section.

Information in each module has been updated to reflect current scientific discoveries. A few sections have been rewritten to include new data and information.
