SCEC INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

Intern Programs Home ACCESS SURE UseIT
Summer 2010 Internship Eligibility and Requirements

NOTE: Each SCEC internship program has somewhat different rules and information. Please! Read carefully! This information is also summarized here.

Eligibility
Citizenship The SURE and USEIT programs have requirements for citizenship. SURE and USEIT interns must be:

  • U.S. citizens or
  • U.S. permanent residents

The ACCESS-U (Undergraduate) program does not have restrictions on citizenship. The ACCESS-U applicant must currently be enrolled in a U.S. academic institution.

Class Standing
All interns must have an undergraduate standing and be enrolled as a student during the entire year of 2010 (i.e. you must be in school at least until the end of the Fall 2010 semester).

ACCESS-U interns must be

  • able to complete a project or thesis in a qualified area of SCEC computer science research
  • ACCESS-U interns are students (preference given to rising juniors and seniors) with enough time left in their undergraduate program to allow completion of an ACCESS-U project. The requirements of the project will be determined by mutual agreement between SCEC administration, the ACCESS-U mentor, and the student.

Requirements
Writing & Meeting Attendance
Shortly after beginning the program, every intern must submit to SCEC a short work plan, outlining his/her research project.

Near the end of each summer, every intern must submit an abstract to the SCEC Annual Meeting, and make a poster for that meeting (regardless of whether the intern can attend the meeting).

Every intern is required to attend the SCEC Annual Meeting unless school obligations prevent this.

From time to time during the internship, and a few weeks after the program concludes, all interns must complete short questionnaires about their personal experiences within the program.

Time Management & Availability
For SURE and USEIT interns, your internship should be the main focus of your summer. If you intend to take a class or work a job, you must get SCEC's agreement – in advance – to ensure that other obligatons will not be too demanding of your time or energy. Failure to do this could result in your immediate dismissal from the program.

For ACCESS interns, your research and thesis must be completed before you graduate and thus you must budget your time/courses/workload accordingly.

SCEC internships consist of several phases. For interns to advance to the next phase, every intern must successfully complete the current phase. At the beginning of a SURE or ACCESS internship, the SURE or ACCESS intern will work with the mentor to set up a phased program. The phases will depend on the particular project and mentor.

For USEIT interns, there are five phases:

  • Phase I. Training, 2 weeks, TBA
  • Phase II. Project Foundation, 3 weeks, TBA
  • Phase III. Project Extension, 2 weeks, TBA
  • Phase IV. Project Dissemination, 1 week, TBA
  • Phase V. SCEC Annual Meeting, TBA

Because USEIT is a team internship, without exception, USEIT interns are required to work in the USEIT intern computer lab on the USC campus every Mon-Fri, 8a 4p, June 14 Aug 6, 2010. Chronically late or absent interns will be dismissed from the program. Do not apply to the USEIT program if you cannot be in the lab during those times.

Holidays & Time Off
SURE and ACCESS interns may observe any national holidays that fall during their internships.

In summer 2010, USEIT interns have two days off:

  • Monday, July 5 (Independence Day, University Holiday)
  • One “personal” day (must be approved by Dr. de Groot at least 1 week in advance).
    • Personal days are generally not granted on critical attendance days such as group presentations, special events, field trips, or days at the very beginning or end of the program.
