SCEC INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

Intern Programs Home ACCESS SURE UseIT
Summer 2008 Internship Eligibility and Requirements

NOTE: Each SCEC internship program has somewhat different rules and information. Please! Read carefully! This information is also summarized here.

Eligibility
Citizenship The SURE and USEIT programs have restrictions on citizenship. SURE and USEIT interns must be:

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States;
  • OR currently enrolled at the University of Southern California.

The ACCESS program does not have restrictions on citizenship.

Class Standing
SURE and USEIT interns must be

  • continuing, undergraduate students. Regrettably,
    • If you have not yet started college, you are NOT eligible … yet.
    • If you graduate in spring, 2008, or earlier, you are NO LONGER eligible.

ACCESS interns must be

  • able to complete a thesis in a qualified area of SCEC computer science research (click on the ACCESS tab above for information about qualified projects):
    • ACCESS-U (undergraduate) interns must be juniors or seniors, with enough time remaining as an undergraduate to allow completion of masters thesis research and writing.
    • ACCESS-G (graduate) interns must be applying to masters degree programs, or fairly new students within a masters program, with enough time remaining as a masters student to allow completion of masters thesis research and writing.

Requirements
Writing and Meeting Attendance
Shortly after beginning the program, every intern must submit to SCEC a short work plan, outlining his/her research project.

Near the end of each summer, every intern must submit an abstract to the SCEC Annual Meeting, and make a poster for that meeting (regardless of whether the intern can attend the meeting).

Every intern is required to attend the SCEC Annual Meeting unless school obligations prevent this.

ACCESS-Graduate interns will be required to submit abstracts to additional, pertinent meetings during the course of their internships.

From time to time during the internship, and a few weeks after the program concludes, all interns must complete short questionnaires about their personal experiences within the program.

Time Management & Availability
For SURE and USEIT interns, your internship should be the main focus of your summer. If you intend to take a class or to work a job, you must get SCEC's agreement – in advance – that it will not be too demanding of your time or energy. Failure to do this could result in your immediate dismissal from the program.

For ACCESS interns, your research and thesis must be completed before you graduate and thus you must budget your time/courses/workload accordingly.

SCEC internships consist of several phases. For interns to advance to the next phase, every intern must successfully complete the current phase. At the beginning of a SURE or ACCESS internship, the SURE or ACCESS intern will work with the mentor to set up a phased program. The phases will depend on the particular project and mentor.

For USEIT interns, there are five phases:

  • Phase I. Training, 2 weeks, June 16 – June 27, 2008
  • Phase II. Project Foundation, 3 weeks, June 30 – July 18, 2008
  • Phase III. Project Extension, 2 weeks, July 21 – Aug 1, 2008
  • Phase IV. Project Dissemination, 1 week, Aug 4 – Aug 8, 2008
  • Phase V. SCEC Annual Meeting, Sep 6-10, 2008.

Because USEIT is a team internship, without exception, USEIT interns are required to work in the USEIT intern computer lab on the USC campus every Mon-Fri, 9a-4p, June 16-Aug 8, 2008. Chronically late or absent interns will be dismissed from the program. Do not apply to the USEIT program if you cannot be in the lab during those times.

Holidays & Time Off
SURE and ACCESS interns may observe any national holidays that fall during their internships.

In summer 2008, USEIT interns have two days off:

  • Friday, July 4 (Independence Day)
  • One “personal” day of the intern’s choosing
    • During the time period June 30- July 11 2008
    • OR during the time period July 21 – Aug 1 2008.
    • The “personal day” must be approved by your USEIT program supervisor at least 1 week in advance.
