Joint Participation and Cooperation Agreements

SCEC CEO director Andrews is Manager of the $800,000 education and outreach element for the CUREe-Caltech (FEMA funded) Woodframe Mitigation Project, Fall 1998 ­ Winter 2001. Duties of the E&O manager include oversight of four projects plus media production: House retrofitting; retrofit of multi-story residences; wood engineering seminars; and construction quality. The E&O group is expected to raise ~$100,000 in cost sharing contributions from corporations over the duration of the project. City of LA and FEMA have agreed to hand off existing shortcourse curriculum and materials to update with research results from this project.

CUREe: SCEC and CUREe jointly support the launching of a HAZUS users' group in southern California. CUREe provides engineering expertise.

CUREe is a participant in the Earthquake Information Providers Group (EqIP), jointly sponsored by SCEC and other NEHRP Agency-funded organizations. A CUREe representatives is a member of the EqIP Steering Committee (EQSTC), chaired by SCEC CEO director Andrews, 1998-2000.

SCEC and CUREe co-sponsor the ""Real Meaning of Seismic Risk"" workshops for LA County (two held in 1999-2000).

SCEC and CUREe partnered to conduct the pilot workshop in 1998. The ""CUREe / SCEC"" Lecture series, designed to package Earth Science and Engineering issues is an all-day seminar for students and professionals who want to gain an appreciation for how seismology impacts engineering design and performance of structures. Attendance: 96.

1999 & 2000: HAZUS presentation and Active faulting and earthquake hazards in the Los Angeles and metropolitan area. Attendance: 100

HAZUS Demonstration for the SCEC Steering Committee. Attendance: 15

Print and Electronic Products and Services Partnership funded by NSF Sept. 2000 - Sept. 2001 to create an ""Electronic Encyclopedia of Earthquakes,"" (E3) a pilot project for content development as part of the Digital Libraries for Earth Science Education (DLESE).
