Joint Participation and Cooperation Agreements

1995-Present: SCEC CEO has provided speakers to numerous media organizations in both pre- and post-earthquake settings.

Los Angeles Local TV station KTLA Channel 5 runs an annual (April) earthquake awareness and preparedness campaign, based on "Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country" and other materials, videos and interviews provided to them by SCEC CEO.

Los Angeles-based Fox News Network, a cable news network with affiliates worldwide, recently updated their earthquake preparedness and information planning book. SCEC CEO's Andrews and Benthien acted as chief consultants on that project.

KFWB Radio: Jack Popejoy (Anchor)

  • Aired a weekly earth sciences-related program, LA Underground, which features SCEC scientists and researchers who deliver one-minute spots on various earthquake-related topics. (1994-1999)
  • Publishes a Web site that links to SCEC's Web pages and features earthquake-related safety and awareness information as a public service.

April 1996: ""Rate of Earthquakes in So. Calif. and Insurance 101"" was covered by several local reporters and writers.

1992: A SCEC/USGS shortcourse for media reporters, ""Earthquakes 101,"" was sponsored by FEMA and OES.

Print and Electronic Products and Services

1995 - 17 SCEC scientists were interviewed by media reporters in the aftermath of the Northridge earthquake. As of 1995, SCEC had produced 50 one-minute radio spots in partnership with KFWB's Jack Popejoy, who produces ""LA Underground.""

1995 - several SCEC scientists appeared in two videos: NOVA's ""Killer Quake"" and a network special, ""The Terrible Truth,"" produced by the USGS.

KTLA Channel 5. Worked in partnership with SCEC in 1997-1998 for 18 months on the task of launching the KTLA / SCEC Care and Prepare Earthquake Preparedness and Awareness TV campaign. Designed reprints of Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country and raised corporate funds to print two million copies of the preparedness sections of the booklet (1.5 million in English; .5 million in Spanish; and .5 million childrens' booklets).

1999 and 2000: Alison Horn continued the project with re-runs of footage gathered during the 1998 project. KTLA has requested an upgrade of the series for 2001.

SCEC Scientists and Staff conducted numerous interviews conducted on LARSE I and II. Release of numerous important publications, reports.
