Joint Participation and Cooperation Agreements

1999, 2000: Joint agreement with LA City's Office of Emergency Services and LA County Emergency Preparedness Commission to co-sponsor ""Real Meaning of Seismic Risk"" (RMOSR) workshops on regional eq hazards and risks for schools.

2000: Andrews participates in the newly-created Los Angeles Emergency Preparedness Department Community Preparedness Task Force.

Meetings and Field Trips:

  • Workshops
  • Shortcourses
  • Seminars
  • Technical Training
  • Field Trips

Fall 1992: SCEC scientists participated in the City of LA Emergency Operations Workshop, Lake Arrowhead, CA. SCEC established an agreement to help LA form its earthquake plan.

1992-1995: CALTRANS: The California Department of Transportation, the County of Los Angeles and the City of Los Angeles, funded the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) over a three year period, April 1992-March 1995, for studies related to the improvement of our knowledge and understanding of the nature and characteristics of strong ground motion resulting from probable major earthquakes in southern California, particularly in the greater Los Angeles region. The project as a whole was divided into nine separate tasks, each with its own Principal Investigators. The Principal Investigators for the overall project were Keiiti Aki (SCEC Science Director) and Geoffrey R. Martin (SCEC Assistant Director for Engineering Applications). Each Final Task Report has been published in separate volumes (see column for State of California for details).

1995: First Insurance Industry Workshop, SCEC Knowledge Transfer, established dialogue among scientists, insurance industry leaders, risk modelers, and public officials.

October 1996: City of L.A. Microzonation Workshop; Convenors: SCEC Outreach; Attendance: 183.

April 1996: Rate of Earthquakes in So. Calif. and Insurance 101; Convenors: SCEC; Attendance: 75 scientists and 150 insurers

1997-2000: City of LA / SCEC / SEAOSC / Joint Task Force (JTF) on Ground Motion effects on Vulnerable Buildings: FEMA-funded project sponsoring CLA, SCEC and others to produce a public booklet on vulnerable structures. USGS Pasadena office scientist Sue Hough has written the text, based on information provided by the JTF. Booklet is in review and is expected to be published in the Winter of 2000-2001.

1997-1999: Presentations by SCEC Director Henyey and SCEC CEO director Andrews to Orange County Disaster Recovery Alliance (OCDRA) on SCEC research and outreach programs.

1999: CoLA, AEG, SCEC: Members of the County of Los Angeles Engineering Geology and Soils Review and Appeals Board evaluate reports from developers, who each use different (and often conflicting) parameters when determining the hazard of a particular area. The meeting was in response to requests from this Board to provide consensus maps of anticipated accelerations and databases of the parameters that would be used to produce such maps, so that a standard set of maps and parameters can be used by all developers. The meeting proved beneficial, as the Board members learned about the various maps, databases and other products which are either currently available or under development.

Cities and Counties of LA:

-Attendees, City of LA Vulnerability workshops and studies (2 vulnerability workshops; 25 workshops to conduct studies on effects of ground motion on vulnerable buildings)

-Co-sponsor, County of LA workshop series for Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery professionals (2 workshops)

-1996: Attended Progress Report on the Southern California Fault and Fold Database- for Association of Engineering Geologists. Convenors: James Dolan et al. Attendance: 50 scientists, 75 engineering geologists from industry.

-1995-1999: SCEC set up exhibits and made presentations at LA City and County Earthquake Fairs each April.

-1995-1999: SCEC set up exhibits and made presentations at LA Metropolitan Water District and LA Metro. Transit Authority

-2000: City of LA Park Rangers: SCEC CEO, T. Henyey, T. Rockwell and M. Forrest conducted two seminars on local faults and two field trips.

Print and Electronic Products and Services FEMA-funded project sponsoring CLA, SCEC and others to produce a public booklet on vulnerable structures. USGS Pasadena office scientist Sue Hough has written the text, based on information provided by the JTF. Booklet is in review and is expected to be published in the Winter of 2000-2001.
