REGISTRATION DEADLINE: September 28, 2007 This workshop will explore the science of earthquakes and apply these concepts to a wide range of activities (both hands-on and technology driven). Topics will be aligned with the California science content standards for grade 6 and grades 9 – 12 (California geology), yet all science educators from grades 6 – 12 are welcome to attend. The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) and the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) will provide curriculum materials, posters, and many of the supplies for the conference. The workshop will feature the earthquake education video Earthquake Country – Los Angeles. Each registered participant will receive a video kit containing an Earthquake Country Los Angeles DVD, maps provided by the Automobile Club of Southern California, a SCEC earthquake visualizations CD, and other resources. In addition, each participant will receive a copy of the workshop textbook Finding Fault in California: An Earthquake Tourist's Guide by Sue Hough and a classroom set of the SCEC publication Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country. Conference participants and discussion leaders will examine how the activities can be best implemented with middle and secondary students. Collectively the group will consider content standards, what is known about learning and the day-to-day challenges of teaching science. The group will share model practices and have ample opportunity to network. Registration Deadline is 28 Sept 2007.
