REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Friday, September 9th, 2005.
This day-long workshop (9am-5:30pm), hosted by the Southern California
Earthquake Center, will present educators with Earth science and
earthquake materials and share activities designed for classroom use.
The workshop gives educators an opportunity to
exchange ideas and share enthusiasm for Earth science education.
All teachers are welcome to attend this workshop, however, in alignment
with the California State Science Standards, the activities are designed
for teachers of grades 5 - 9. Most activities are
adaptable for higher or lower grades.
The Earthquake Education Workshop will feature:
- Teaching Materials (i.e., maps, CD-ROMs, books) - valued at $100,
provided by the Incorporated Institutions for Seismology (IRIS)
Consortium
- Introduction to earthquake content
- Addressing the California Science Standards
- Hands on activities to include:
- Slinky Waves
- Brick and Sandpaper Stick-Slip Fault Model
- Dynamic Plate Puzzle
- Southern California Earthquake Center Annual meeting
- The teacher workshop is immediately preceding
the annual meeting of the Southern California Earthquake Center. This is a
meeting where scientists and engineers come together to share and discuss
their research. We would like to invite you to come to the meeting. Please
email us if you plan to attend so we can have an accurate
count of how many will be attending. You can find more information about

planning to attend the entire meeting you DO NOT need to register for the
meeting.
