2005 Annual Meeting: College Earthquake Course Workgroup
SCEC College Earthquake Course Workgroup

When:  Wednesday, September 14th, 8:00 - 9:15 am
Where: Grand Ballroom, SCEC Annual Meeting, Palm Springs, CA

Organizer: Mark Benthien, SCEC

Over the last year, SCEC CEO has organized a small group of SCEC faculty to discuss the potential for organizing resources for introductory-level earthquakes courses. These resources could be shared among the SCEC community as well as instructors elsewhere, including community colleges and other schools where such resources are needed.

For example, Bob Yeats has been developing an online course based on his "Living with Earthquakes..." books. SCEC has developed the "LA3D" software, online seismicity and GPS modules, "TeraShake" visualizations, and the "Electronic Encyclopedia of Earthquakes." Pat Abbott at SDSU has produced the Earthquake Country -- Los Angeles video. Many of you are developing other lab and classroom resources that are excellent and we want to learn about them.

Over the last few months, a workgroup of SCEC faculty and education specialists have been discussing how to organize our existing resources and prioritize the development of new lab exercizes, quizzes, and other teaching tools.

This session will present the results so far of this collaboration and seek the input of others in SCEC who may contribute to the effort or use the resources when they are made available.
