TriNet ShakeMap Working Group (SMaWG) announces
the activation of Version 2 of ShakeMap

From The TriNet ShakeMap Working Group (SMaWG):

We are pleased to announce the activation ofVersion 2 of ShakeMap (V2). While many of the revisions are "under-the-hood" you will find that we have also redesigned the web pages to be simpler, more intuitive, and for faster access. The ShakeMap web site may still be found at http://www.trinet.org/shake.html, however the new, official, URL will be http://www.trinet.org/shake.

NEW GEOLOGY

Among the many enhancements to ShakeMap is the use of the new CDMG Preliminary Statewide Site Conditions Map. You may notice some differences between maps generated by V1 and V2 as a result. All of the archived and historic events have been re-run with V2 using the CDMG map, and are available on the web site and for download.

NEW WEB PAGES

It is our hope that the new web page design will enhance the usability of the site, as well as reduce download times.

You may notice that the list of stations and their amplitudes is no longer downloaded by default for the PGA and PGV maps. The station list may be accessed by clicking on one of the stations in the map.
This action will open a new window containing the station amplitude summay table. As always, clicking on a station will scroll the list to the information for that station.

Since many of the links on the pages have changed, if you are a regular ShakeMap user, you may wish to clear the cache on your web browser to avoid attempts to load old pages.

NEW DOWNLOAD PAGE

One of the new features of the V2 web pages is a "Download" tab for each event. This link will take you to a page that lists the various files available for download, as well as information about the format of the files.

SHAKEMAIL AVAILABLE

An ASCII representation of the instrumental intensity map is now available via email. Visit http://www-socal.wr.usgs.gov/mailing-lists.html to see an example ASCII map and to sign up for automatic post-earthquake delivery.

CHANGES TO FTP SITE

As in the past, data will still be available for download from the Caltech Seismo Lab FTP site (ftp://seismo.gps.caltech.edu) in the directory /pub/shake. The structure of this site has changed, however. Previously, the files were all in the main directory and had the event id in their filename (e.g. /pub/shake/9108645.grid.xyz). In the new scheme, the files for each event will be in a subdirectory
named with the event id, and the file names will not have the event id prepended (e.g. /pub/shake/9108645/grid.xyz).

CHANGES TO PUSH

For those of you receiving a data push, the file naming format will not change. You will, however, begin to receive a file <event_id>.cancel for events that are cancelled.

V2 SOURCE AVAILABILITY

The V2 source code and documentation will soon be available for distribution to qualified seismic network operators. We hope to work with these networks to create a single, nationwide ShakeMap package for ease of implementation and upgrade.

As always, we welcome feedback and suggestions.

Sincerely,

The SMaWG V2 Team:
Craig Scrivner, CDMG scrivner@gps.caltech.edu
Dave Wald, USGS wald@usgs.gov
Bruce Worden, USGS bruce@gps.caltech.edu

P.S. We apologize if you receive more than one copy of this letter -- it is being sent to several lists that may have some degree of overlap.
