In August and November of 1999, two giant earthquakes devastated northwest Turkey. Together, the quakes killed between 30,000 and 40,000 people, placing them among the most deadly earthquake events of this century. This program features interviews with victims, survivors and their rescuers as they explain what happened during and after the earthquake. Since 1939, there's been a steady procession of earthquakes on the North Anatolian fault heading toward Istanbul, almost like a row of falling dominos. After plotting these events, geologists suspected that Izmit would be the epicenter of the next big quake. But they had no idea of the magnitude of the devastation. Computer animations show the building of stress and reveal how the buildings fell, and why the older buildings fared better than newer construction. The program also profiles the young members of a club of mountaineers who rescued over 200 victims and became the symbol of hope for a nation.

Produced and directed by Julio Moline; features interviews with Ross Stein (USGS).
