Make plans now to attend the upcoming Western
States Seismic Policy Council's (WSSPC)
Annual Conference, October 21-24, 2001, in Sacramento, California.
This is going to be an exciting and influential conference,
co-hosted by the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services
and the Department of Conservation's Division of Mines and Geology
(CDMG, the state geological
survey of California) under the auspices of WSSPC.
GENERAL CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION
& SCHEDULE
The conference will provide the opportunity for all of us to
learn techniques that can work from a number of successful communicators.
We will address some of the natural psychological barriers to
accepting risk messages and potential ways that they can be overcome
from experienced psychologists working in the field. Legal ramifications
of communicating
risk will be discussed with attorneys who are working in the
field at the California state level and the national level.
We will also consider ways in which risk messages can become
confusing and examine the array of post-damaging earthquake risk
communications that need to be provided and how these information
transfers can be made more successful than in the past. Risk
communication within the business community is another area that
will be examined. For a complete schedule (updated on 9/19/01),
including plenary sessions and workshop session speakers, go
to www.wsspc.org/events/ac2001schedule.htm.
The challenge that we are facing is that
we understand the certainty with which damaging earthquake occurrences
will affect crucial portions of the western United States. We
are not as successful as we can and need to be in making the
public in general and decision and policy makers aware of how
these events can influence their future and what they can do
about it.

seismic risk communication (pdf download) written by Jim
Davis (California State Geologist) published in Seismological
Research Letters.
