A Sally Ride Science Festival was held on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles, on Saturday, October 4, 2008. The event was attended by students from various elementary schools, grade schools, and high schools located in the surrounding counties. Since the main focus of Sally Ride Festivals is to encourage girls in the science and engineering fields, most of the participants were girls, though a few boys were in attendance as well.

09/30/2008 Education Vineyard Neighbors’ Day Street Festival

On September 21st, 2008, the West Adams Neighborhood Council in Los Angeles hosted the Vineyard Neighbors' Day Street Festival and Health Fair at the Vineyard Recreation Center and park. The goal of the annual event is "fostering economic support, community interaction and celebrating unity through our diversities", which it did with the presence of a variety of booths, as well as through live poetry readings and live music. Several tents held food vendors, while others ranged from specialty teas and healthy recipe books to McCain and Obama campaign tables. A temporary skate park was set up along with a waterslide and a small space museum to entertain the children.

09/25/2008 Education USC Health and Safety Fair

On September 17, 2008, SCEC participated in the USC Health and Safety fair with a booth set up along Trousdale, the main roadway that passes through the University Park campus of USC. The fair also included representatives from the Los Angeles Police Department, the Department of Public Safety, and other local, community, and university organizations. The SCEC table was manned by various SCEC student workers and Mark Benthien, the Director of Communication, Education, and Outreach for SCEC at USC. It featured information on the ShakeOut as well as earthquake safety kits that could be created at home, or purchased from several of the nearby tables, which also had emergency supplies such as radios, flashlights, and fire extinguishers for sale.

06/16/2008 Education SCEC-ACCESS Intern Participates in Career Fair at Wilberforce University

Wilberforce University requires each student to complete two co-ops and/or internships to graduate. To aid students in finding an internship in their field, the Cooperative Education Office hosts a career fair every semester. As a recent graduate of Wilberforce University, Jennifer Hairston was a representative for SCEC at Wilberforce University's spring career fair. Jennifer was able to connect with current students in the computer science and engineering field and introduce them to the SCEC internship programs. She was also able to discuss student related programs to the computer science professors at the university so they'll be able to relay the message to students that were unable to attend the career fair.

05/10/2008 Education SCEC Participates in Science and Technology Awareness Day

On May 10, 2008, the Los Angeles African American Engineers & Professional Employees Association held the annual Science and Technology Awareness Day at the Exposition Park Community Center in Los Angeles. The Science and Technology Awareness Day is an event held every year where students are invited to participate in engineering and scientific activities. Among some of the sponsors/participants this year were the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, the American Chemical Society and the Southern California Earthquake Center.

03/07/2008 Education Long Beach Earthquake: 75th Anniversary

Seventy-five years ago, at 5:54 p.m. on March 10, 1933, southern California experienced its deadliest seismic disaster in recorded history when a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Long Beach area. The Long Beach earthquake occurred along the Newport-Inglewood fault zone centered just off the coast of Newport Beach, with a hypocentral depth of 10 kilometers. Seismic records suggest a maximum slip along the fault of about 1 meter, with a total rupture length of roughly 15 kilometers. The actual earthquake rupture lasted only 5 seconds, though ground shaking (as is typical) lasted at least twice as long. The maximum recorded ground acceleration was 0.22g, or 22% the force of gravity (though the nearest recording site for this data was 27 kilometers from the epicenter). Despite these rather modest seismological numbers, the earthquake killed over 120 people and caused property losses estimated at $50 million (1933) dollars.

02/12/2008 Education Seeing the Results of a SCEC Earthquake Education Workshop

According to the California Science Content Standards, sixth grade is Earth Sciences year, and part of a teacher's job is to teach earthquakes. It is with that in mind that middle school teacher Sue Robins attended the earthquake education workshop SCEC co-hosted with AEG back in September.

02/04/2008 Education Earthquake Education Workshop at Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Visualization Center

On Thursday, November 15, 2007, the fifth annual Earthquake Education Workshop was held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Visualization Center (SIO VizCenter) at UC San Diego. In the previous four workshops educational specialists from the University of Southern California and the Pasadena Field Office of the U.S. Geological Survey offered training and support to the new SIO VizCenter instructors. This year was the inaugural workshop facilitated by instructors from the SCEC institutions in the San Diego region. Instructors at this year's workshop included Dr. Debi Kilb from the SIO VizCenter, Dr. Cheryl Peach from the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Dr. Bridget Konter from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Dr. Robert Mellors from San Diego State University.

The Southern California Earthquake Center hosted a booth in the exhibition hall at the California Science Education Conference held in the Long Beach Convention Center, from October 25-27, 2007. Over 2,400 K-12 science educators from the state of California participated in the conference that is hosted annually by the California Science Teachers Association. At these meetings educators have the opportunity to attend workshops, exhibits and network with other professionals. The exhibit hall included a variety of booths ranging from textbook publishers to non-profit organizations and fundraisers.
