INVESTIGATIONS

In 1997, development continued on the educational module "Investigating Earthquakes through Regional Seismicity", as well as other educational products designed for display on the WWW. The majority of the work was focused on developing background material and activities for three of the five proposed sections of the "Investigating Earthquakes through Regional Seismicity" module. These sections cover the topics, "What is an Earthquake", "Foreshocks, Mainshocks, and Aftershocks", and "Geographic Distribution of Earthquakes. Other products developed this year by John Marquis are Time-Lapse animations of monthly (1997) and yearly (1985 through 1996) seismicity in Southern California.

RESULTS

The educational WWW pages developed this year were presented at the 1997 annual SCEC meeting, and at an "Earthquakes on the Internet" workshop for teachers held at Caltech on November 8th. During the workshop, teachers from the SCEC partnerships schools were introduced to, and participated in, some of the activities in the educational module. Other earthquake material available from the SCEC_DC, e.g. seismicity maps, catalogs, etc. were also presented.

The feedback from the teachers at the workshop on the educational products already completed was excellent. In general, they felt that they were of high quality and at the right level for use in the classroom. The educational module (Figure 1) has not yet been publicly released on the Internet. We anticipate that the module will be completed by October of 1998. A number of products developed for use in the module have however been available on the WWW over the last year. These include the interactive fault maps (http://www.data.scec.org/faults/faultmap.html), interactive seismicity maps (http://www.data.scec.org/clickmap.html) and recently released yearly and monthly animations. Access rates to these products have been at approximately 20,000 times/month (Figure 2). The availability of these URLs has increased the visibility of the SCEC Education program to educational communities.
