Crustal Deformation and Modeling (CDM)

We seek proposals for crustal deformation modeling that contribute to our ultimate goal of physics-based seismic hazard assessments (SHA). The CDM group focuses on deformation occurring within the earthquake cycle, at time scales linking dynamic rupture (minutes) to secular deformation (thousands of years).

We seek proposals for developing SAF system-wide models of fault system dynamics to model absolute stresses and their interseismic evolution (A3 and A11). We also seek modeling proposals to investigate discrepancies between geodetic and geologic fault slip rates (A2), to explore the evolution of off-fault damage and especially its implications in terms of upper crustal stresses (A7), and to characterize stress evolution throughout the earthquake cycle, particularly for models with heterogeneous lithosphere and fault zone properties (A10 and A11).

Projects to expand the use of existing SCEC products are also welcome (C). Such efforts might include meshing the SCEC CBM and testing the kinematic consistency of the SCEC CFM. We also seek proposals to rapidly generate end-member postseismic deformation models to guide the deployment of GPS receivers after a large earthquake (D).

SCEC’s goal of physics-based SHA will require a consistent physical framework for crustal deformation at all time scales, therefore proposals to connect earthquake cycle models with FARM or LAD products will also be welcome.
