Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

SCEC Workshop on Establishing a Geologic Framework in Southern California

Conveners: Michael Oskin, Whitney Behr, Liz Hearn, and Wayne Thatcher
Date: June 8-9, 2016
Location: Kellogg West Conference Center, Pomona, CA
SCEC Award: 16183
Attendance: If interested in attending, please complete application (due May 9).

OVERVIEW: Understanding stress conditions within the crust is a key component of physics-based earthquake rupture forecasting. SCEC5 will feature a community rheology model (CRM) that formally links strain rate to stressing rate, and, ultimately, absolute stress state in southern California. A geologic framework, containing lithology and thermal properties, is a necessary constituent of such a model. This workshop will bring together geologists, geophysicists, and geodynamicists to define how a geologic framework for southern California should be constructed. There is a deep body of knowledge of the lithology and lithospheric architecture of southern California, but no comprehensive three-dimensional model yet exists. The workshop will be structured around defining goals for a geologic framework model that can be realistically achieved over SCEC5.

DAY 1: Full-Day of topical sessions, limited invited presentations, & breakout group discussions.
DAY 2: Half-Day of writing and discussion for workshop conveners & science contributors.
