Postdoctoral scholar in passive source seismic imaging at UT Dallas

he Department of Sustainable Earth Systems Sciences (SESS) at The University of Texas at Dallas invites application for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the field of passive source seismology, which will be funded and mentored by Prof. Joseph Byrnes. The primary project will be an NSF-funded collaboration with Ryan Porter and Jim Gaherty at Northern Arizona University to investigate the composition of the lower continental crust with the joint inversion of surface wave and receiver function data, see https://tinyurl.com/nsfawardlink. This team will target outstanding questions about the bulk composition of the lower crust, the sharpness of the Moho, and the role of crustal density in supporting high topography.

Please apply through the UT Dallas site here: https://jobs.utdallas.edu/postings/30310. Review of submissions will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The start date is highly flexible. Please reach out to joseph.byrnes@utdallas.edu with any questions.

UUSS Network Administrator Position

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) is an autonomous unit within the Department of Geology and Geophysics that focuses on research, education, and outreach related to earthquakes and seismic hazard. UUSS operates a network of over 200 seismograph stations throughout Utah and the Yellowstone volcanic region for 24/7 monitoring and reporting of earthquakes. UUSS staff include research scientists, engineers, information specialists, computing experts, and a business manager. Partner agencies include the Utah Geological Survey, the Utah Division of Emergency Management, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Position Description:
The Systems Administrator is a full-time, benefitted position within UUSS that manages the core software and hardware that support continuous seismic monitoring. Close collaboration with UUSS staff and external IT staff at the University of Utah is needed. Owing to the 24/7 nature of UUSS operations, essential services occasionally require the ability to troubleshoot remotely, or more infrequently on-site, outside of normal business hours. Candidates must be experienced with Linux (Ubuntu), networking (DNS, Cisco switches and firewalls), web-server management (Apache and nginx), and user authentication (LDAP). The ideal candidate will also have a working knowledge of networked file systems (CephFS and NetApp), secrets management (Vault), and orchestration management tools (Kubernetes).

Just announced: EarthScope Consortium awarded National Geophysical Facility

In June 2024, EarthScope Consortium submitted a proposal to the National Science Foundation to operate the National Geophysical Facility (NGF). It has just been announced that EarthScope has been selected as the operator of the NGF, for the next 5 years.

Many people in the geophysics community provided input and ideas leading up to the development of the proposal, and EarthScope is grateful to the community for their vision for the future of geophysics.

More details about the capabilities and structure of the NGF will be posted over the next weeks and months, as they are implemented. None of the core capabilities that have supported community geophysics under NSF SAGE or NSF GAGE will be retired, and some new things will be coming, so the community can expect the same (or even better) facility support as in years past.

Tenured/Tenure-Track: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Experimental Rock Deformation, Texas A&M University: College of Arts & Sciences: Geology and Geophysics

The Department of Geology and Geophysics in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University is seeking applicants for a full-time 9-month position at the rank of either Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured) in Experimental Rock Deformation. The successful applicant will establish an active research program in the Department of Geology and Geophysics and the Center for Tectonophysics. We seek applicants whose interests enhance and broaden our existing strengths in rock deformation, tectonics, and multidisciplinary studies of natural systems. We are particularly interested in individuals who creatively combine experimental rock deformation with observational and theoretical approaches to explore the rheology of the lower crust and mantle. The successful applicant will lead a vibrant, cutting-edge research program that leverages existing strengths of the Department of Geology & Geophysics, while expanding our reach into national and international-scale initiatives. The successful candidate would be expected to take advantage of extensive facilities at the John Handin Laboratory for Experimental Rock Deformation in the Center for Tectonophysics, and can use other instrumentation of the department and university (e.g., Materials Characterization Facility; Microscopy and Imaging Center). The anticipated starting date is Fall 2026 semester.
The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain an independent and externally funded research program and contribute to transformative teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will also conduct service activities in the Department, College, University, and national and international professional communities, and participate in outreach activities. Texas A&M University is a Hispanic-serving, land-, sea-, and space-grant university, located at the center of the Bryan/College Station metro area with a dynamic and international community of over 270,000 people. Information about the Department of Geology & Geophysics can be found at: http://artsci.tamu.edu/geology-geophysics.

    Qualifications
A Ph.D in Geology, Geophysics, or related research discipline is required.

    Application Instructions
Application reviews will begin on November 17, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. Interested applicants must apply through the Texas A&M University faculty job board hosted by Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/174008 and upload the following:
    1. Cover Letter
    2. Curriculum Vitae
    3. Personal statement to include philosophy and plans for teaching, research, and service.
    4. Contact information for at least 3 references to solicit letters of recommendation
Questions can be sent to the attention of Dr. Hiroko Kitajima (kitaji@tamu.edu), Department of Geology and Geophysics, Texas A&M University, Search Committee Chair.

The University is aware that attracting and retaining exceptional faculty often depends on meeting the needs of two careers and therefore has a Dual Career Program.
