Applications Open for SDSU/UCSD Joint PhD Program in Geophysics — Fall 2026 Assistantships Available

San Diego State University and University of California San Diego are accepting applications for the Joint Doctoral Program in Geophysics. The SDSU/UCSD Joint Program (https://earth.sdsu.edu/jdp/opportunity/) provides full access to the Geophysics curriculum of UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, with additional specialized courses and research opportunities offered by SDSU faculty. Assistantships for Fall 2026 are available for research in fields including earthquake physics, wave propagation and strong motion, fault zone structure and dynamics, induced seismicity, computational seismology, and subsurface imaging. A competitive financial support package is offered to successful applicants, who must meet doctoral admissions requirements of both universities. Apply by December 1, 2025. Funded PhD positions at the University of California, San Diego

Funded PhD positions are available in the department of Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in Prof. Semnani’s research group, with start dates of Spring 2026 and Fall 2026. The positions are in the areas of computational mechanics, machine learning, geomechanics, natural hazards and risk analysis, material characterization and modeling, and composite materials. We are looking for highly motivated and talented individuals with bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. A strong background in computer programming and solid mechanics is a plus.

Interested candidates should email the following information in the form of one single PDF file to Prof. Semnani. Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.
