Dear SCEC Community & Friends,
SCEC continues to foster a dynamic, multidisciplinary collaboration in earthquake science—advancing system-level understanding, workforce development, and community engagement to enhance societal resilience. As we transition into a new phase under incoming Director Ahmed Elbanna, and while pursuing new funding sources, the 2026 Community Science Plan emphasizes sustaining the SCEC community and preserving core capabilities.

Departing from our traditional annual call, SCEC will issue two phased proposal calls this cycle:
- First Call: Focused on sustaining community and preserving critical capabilities. Proposals will be due November 15, 2025. This call does not initiate new research projects but supports workshops and activities that:
- Conclude major research initiatives
- Showcase Community Earth Models
- Strengthen integration of data, simulations, and applications for hazard and risk reduction
- Advance science milestones under SCEC’s four research thrusts
- Promote community engagement and workforce development
A second call will be issued in early 2026 to support teams to form Technical Activity Groups (TAGs)—self-organized, interdisciplinary teams focused on integrative science with societal impact. Interested groups are encouraged to submit a one-page Letter of Intent to the SCEC Science Steering Committee by November 15, 2025. The SSC will provide feedback to help coordinate efforts ahead of the second call.

We invite all members of the SCEC community to participate in this important transition:
- Submit a Workshop Proposal: Propose activities that help sustain core capabilities, advance SCEC’s science milestones, and foster inclusive community and workforce development. MORE INFO
- Prepare a TAG Letter of Intent: Begin forming interdisciplinary teams to address complex challenges in earthquake science. SUBMIT LOI
- Attend the Virtual Town Hall: Join us on October 16, 2025 to learn more about both proposal calls and the TAG process. REGISTER NOW
- Stay Connected: Sign up for the SCEC Community Mailing List to receive updates and event invitations.
Please forward this message to anyone you think will be interested. We appreciate your continued contributions to advancing earthquake system science and look forward to working together to support the next phase of SCEC’s collaborative research.
