Postdoctoral Research Scientist Fellowship at LDEO of Columbia University
|
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for Postdoctoral Fellowships in the fields of Earth, environmental, and climate sciences. Candidates should have recently completed their Ph.D. or should expect to complete their degree requirements by September 2026.
Researchers at the Observatory work to understand the dynamics of the Earth's chemical, physical, and biological systems, from the core to the upper atmosphere, including Earth-human interactions. Our scientists lead research in the fields of solid Earth dynamics; ocean, atmospheric, and climate systems; cryospheric dynamics; paleoclimate; biogeoscience; and solutions to air, water or soil contamination impacting communities.
The principal selection criteria for Fellows are scientific excellence and a clearly expressed plan to investigate problems at the forefront of Earth science. Applications from all related fields are welcomed. Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to contact potential mentors as early as possible. To find prospective mentors, you may read about the research conducted by our Professors, Lamont Research Professors, and Research Scientists at https://lamont.columbia.edu/research-divisions.
Fellowships are supported institutionally for 24 months, include a $12,000 research allowance, and carry an annual salary of $72,116. Successful candidates will be encouraged to apply for external funding and may be eligible for further internal awards and positions. Lamont is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive culture. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those who are traditionally underrepresented in the fields of earth, environmental, and climate sciences.
Qualifications: Candidates should have recently completed their Ph.D. or should expect to complete their degree requirements by September 2026.
Columbia University benefits accompany this Officer of Research appointment.
Application Instructions: For more information, and to apply for the fellowship, please visit: http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/postdoc.
The deadline for applications is November 7, 2025.

Job Opportunity: Research Data Specialist II
|
The Research Data Specialist II supports the efforts of the Earthquake Data Products Unit in the California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP) of the California Geological Survey (CGS). Under the general direction and supervision of the Senior Engineering Geologist, the Research Data Specialist II is responsible for complex analysis of earthquake data and station information in response to client’s reporting requests. The incumbent will utilize modern software technologies to query strong-motion data and seismic station information from flat files and the Center for Engineering Strong Motion Data (CESMD) database for use in research to develop forecast models. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: If new to California state service, you will need to have taken and passed the examination for this classification in order to be hired for this position. If you are a current state employee, but do not have transfer eligibility or list eligibility, you will need to have taken and passed the examination for this classification in order to be hired for this position. Call for Papers – Special Issue on “New Advances in Engineering Seismology” (Applied Sciences, MDPI)
|
We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Special Issue “New Advances in Engineering Seismology”, to be published in the journal Applied Sciences (MDPI).
|
This Special Issue aims to highlight recent progress in engineering seismology, including advances in experimental, numerical, and data-driven approaches for understanding and modeling ground motion, site effects, and seismic risk. We welcome both methodological contributions and applied studies bridging seismology, engineering, and risk assessment.
|
- Dr. Afifa Imtiaz, Swiss Seismological Service, ETH Zurich
- Dr. Antonio Cavallaro, CNR ISPC – Institute of Heritage Science
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
|
- Site characterization and local amplification
- Seismic microzonation and ground-motion modeling
- Distributed sensing (e.g., DAS) and ambient noise analysis
- Soil-structure interaction and nonlinear effects
- Machine learning and AI in seismic data analysis
- Urban-scale seismic risk and resilience
Submission Deadline: 20 January 2026
|
|
All papers will undergo standard peer review. Applied Sciences is an open-access journal indexed in SCIE. We warmly invite your submissions and would be grateful if you could share this announcement with interested colleagues.
