Applications Open for SDSU/UCSD Joint Ph.D. Program in Geophysics — Fall 2026 Assistantships Available
San Diego State University and University of California San Diego are accepting applications for the Joint Doctoral Program in Geophysics. The SDSU/UCSD Joint Program (https://earth.sdsu.edu/jdp/opportunity/) provides full access to the Geophysics curriculum of UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, with additional specialized courses and research opportunities offered by SDSU faculty. Assistantships for Fall 2026 are available for research in fields including earthquake physics, wave propagation and strong motion, fault zone structure and dynamics, induced seismicity, computational seismology, and subsurface imaging. A virtual open house of the program can be found at https://earth.sdsu.edu/ph-d-in-geophysics-virtual-open-house-2025/. A competitive financial support package is offered to successful applicants, who must meet doctoral admissions requirements of both universities. Apply by December 1, 2025. For application procedure and further information, see https://earth.sdsu.edu/jdp/opportunity/, or send inquiries to Professor Kim Olsen (kbolsen@sdsu.edu).

The California Geological Survey Seismic Hazards Program is hiring an Engineering Seismologist to support the program’s hazards mapping and essential facilities review activities to make California more resilient and safer from earthquakes and tsunami hazards. Using knowledge of applied seismology, geoscience, and seismic hazard analysis, the incumbent will work with a team of geoscientists and GIS professionals in producing seismic hazard maps, developing models to assess earthquake ground motions and tsunami hazards, and peer review of geologic hazard reports for schools, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure across the State. If interested, please carefully review the link below for more information about this position and application instructions. Questions related to this position should be directed to Tim Dawson (timothy.dawson@conservation.ca.gov) Applications due: November 17, 2025. Seismic Anisotropy Workshop Announcment
We are planning an NSF-supported workshop, titled “Integrating Seismic Anisotropy, Geodynamics, and Rock Deformation,” to be held at Washington University in St. Louis on May 31-June 2, 2026. The event will include an evening welcome reception on May 31, workshop sessions on June 1 and June 2, and an optional social event on the evening of June 2. We have funding from NSF to partially cover many of the workshop expenses, including meals for participants, and some funding for partial reimbursement of lodging and travel expenses, particularly for early-career scientists.
Our tentative lineup of invited speakers includes Magali Billen (University of California, Davis), Sarah Brownlee (Wayne State University), Manuele Faccenda (University of Padua), Lars Hansen (University of Minnesota), Ágnes Király (University of Oslo), Joshua Russell (Syracuse University), Carl Tape (University of Alaska), Jessica Warren (University of Delaware), Doug Wiens (Washington University in St. Louis), and Jonathan Wolf (University of California, Berkeley).
We hope that you might be interested in participating in the workshop, and/or spreading the word to students and others who may be interested in attending. For now, this is mostly an announcement to please save the date, and to keep an eye on our workshop website at https://sites.wustl.edu/anisotropy/, where we will post additional details as they firm up, and where you can sign up for future email updates. We expect to open applications to the workshop on January 1, with an application deadline around February 15 and a registration and abstract deadline around April 15.
We hope to see you in St. Louis!
