SCEC Workshop: Multi-Scale Seismic Velocity Models for the San Andreas Fault System in the Western US
We would like to draw your attention to the SCEC Workshop: Multi-Scale Seismic Velocity Models for the San Andreas Fault System in the Western US, which will be held from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm PT on April 4, 2025.
SUMMARY: At this workshop, we will plan a coordinated research approach to develop multiscale Vp and Vs models for the western US that can be used for simulations of realistic ground motion to frequencies of interest to engineers (e.g. 5-10 Hz), and to support a range of additional studies. Additional key discussion topics include IT tools needed to maintain, access, use, and visualize the velocity models, criteria for incorporating updates into the community models, and practical pathways for following up on recommendations developed in the workshop.
Session 1: Current Seismic Velocity Models for the SAFS in the Western US Session 2: Methods to Combine and Evaluate Velocity Models Session 3: Tools for Using Models
This virtual workshop is open to anyone interested in contributing to the community discussion on Multi-Scale Seismic Velocity Models for the San Andreas Fault System in the Western US.

ERC PhD and PostDoc positions in modelling & imaging earthquake systems
At Utrecht University we seek a PhD candidate and a postdoctoral researcher for up to 4 years to model and image earthquake systems in subduction zones. So are you - or do you know any one - excited to understand and image earthquakes? Please forward them this link:
They would merge unprecedented amounts of data and physics through High-Performance Computing to improve inferences of future earthquake locations, sizes, and maybe even timing. Significant advances will come from integrating much more satellite observations (e.g., horizontal and vertical velocities from before, during and after earthquakes) and novel system-based physics integrating tectonic plates, faults and a mantle in one system.
Working conditions and research environment in the Netherlands are very good. For any questions, please contact Dr. Ylona van Dinther (y.vandinther@uu.nl).

Green Foundation Postdoctoral Appointments in Geophysics
The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, has openings starting in 2025 for at least one postdoctoral Green Scholar. For this special, out-of-cycle, recruitment, an applicant must have received their PhD later than January 1, 2024, or expect to receive it no later than October 1, 2025. The appointment cannot start until after the award of the PhD. The applicant will be expected to be in La Jolla concurrently with the period of appointment.
The positions are for one year, renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Starting salary is $70,000/yr plus benefits, along with $3000/yr of discretionary research funds.
Applications are due by May 31, 2025, and should be submitted through https://igpp.ucsd.edu/about/green-foundation/scholarships/green-scholar-info. Potential applicants are strongly advised to initiate contact with prospective mentor(s) well before this date.
Applications must include a statement of research interests (1-2 pages, 12 point), a dissertation abstract (1 page), and a curriculum vita with publications list (1-3 pages, 12 point), along with personal information. (This includes immigration status, to allow us to be aware of the need for a visa). The application also requires contact information for two writers of support letters, but candidates are themselves responsible for ensuring that these support letters are submitted (by emails to greenfound@ucsd.edu) by June 15, 2025.
Review of applications typically takes 1-2 months. Applications may be accepted until the position is filled, but full consideration is not assured if all materials are not received by the deadlines given above.
Please address questions to greenfound@ucsd.edu
