The SCEC Community Stress Model Goes Statewide

The new SCEC Community Stress Model (CSM) now covers the entire San Andreas Fault System (SAFS), extending from Southern to Northern California. The 2024 release fills critical data gaps in Community Earth Models (CEMs) and aims to improve the characterization of in-situ stress states across California. This expanded Statewide CSM is a valuable resource for researchers, enhancing hazard assessment and providing a more detailed understanding of the SAFS stress regime.

Researchers Karen Luttrell, Liz Hearn, and Jeanne Hardebeck leveraged existing research products and community expertise in stress modeling, strain rate analysis, and cyberinfrastructure development to enhance the CSM. They established a unified 3D grid to allow for the insertion of new stress orientation data over the entire SAFS. The use of pre-existing Western U.S. deformation rate models enabled rapid calculation of the new statewide stressing rate estimations.

The updated SCEC CSM integrates diverse datasets, including stress orientation, stress accumulation rates, and estimates of stress magnitudes.

2025 CIG The Next Generation Community Workshop

The deadline for submitting an abstract for the 2025 CIG TNG is less than 2 weeks away. Submit by June 15 for full consideration.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with the geodynamics community in a small workshop setting in the beautiful mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado, from August 4-7, 2025. Join us to discuss cross-cutting science and the next generation vision towards the understanding of large and small-scale Earth systems as we explore themes in Computational Geodynamics and Society, Space, the Machine, Community, Scales, and Hardware.

The meeting includes pre-workshop tutorials featuring community codes ASPECT, PyLith, Rayleigh, and the SPECFEM family including the new SPECFEM++. Or you can learn more about best practices in open source software by taking the tutorial Crafting Quality Software.

Are you an early career scientist? Travel support is available when submitting an abstract. Don't miss the early career reception Monday evening August 4 after the tutorials.

Visit the meeting website to see our exciting lineup of speakers.
Deadlines:
  • ABSTRACT DEADLINE: JUNE 15, 2025
  • Lodging: July 4, 2025
  • Registration: July 4, 2025
  • Late Registration: July 18, 2025

[SZ4D] 2026 US & Chile Exchange Program - Apply Now

SZNet, the international collaboration component of SZ4D, is launching the third edition of the SZNet US & Chile Exchange Program. The participant application portal is now open! Students and early career scientists are encouraged to apply.
What is the US & Chile Exchange Program?
This US & Chile Exchange Program connects students and early career scientists (within 3 years of receiving their last degree) based in the US or Chile with host institutions in the partner country that align with their research interests. Through this program, participants receive support from SZNet to conduct a month-long, independent research project at a host institution of their choice. The program is designed to expand opportunities for emerging scientists while fostering international collaboration.

Information for Applicants
This program is intended to support:
1. Applicants without existing research contacts in the partner country. Students and early-career scientists interested in applying can explore the list of interested hosts on our website. Participants should reach out to this prospective host to define a project.
2. Applicants with an existing contact in the partner country. In this case, applicants are welcome to apply to work with that scientist/institution, regardless of whether that scientist has registered as a prospective host. Applicants should work with their host to define a project and fill out the participant application as normal.

To apply, applicants will need to submit the application through the application portal. This form will prompt applicants for a short project description and a letter of collaboration from their chosen host, along with other questions about the applicant’s career goals and background. Applicants can review the application questions here.

With any questions, please reach out at contact@sz4d.org.
