This SCEC-supported workshop aims to build a geo-referenced, community-driven frictional database that expands the Community Rheology Model (CRM) to include brittle fault properties mapped to California fault rocks. As SCEC grows in scope and statewide relevance, the need for community input on brittle fault rheology is critical to advancing next-generation rupture models, seismic hazard forecasts, and understanding earthquake mechanics.
|
The workshop will bring together scientists from the earthquake geology, experimental rock mechanics, geophysics, and numerical modeling communities—including early-career researchers and those new to SCEC. We will collaboratively:
|
- Design a frictional CRM database: identifying relevant data types, metadata, and integration strategies with other Community Earth Models (CFM, CVM, CTM, CGM).
- Pinpoint persistent unknowns in brittle rheology across California's diverse lithologies and fault zones.
- Strategize how to advocate for rheology and its central role in the future of SCEC and potential partnerships with initiatives such as CRESCENT.
The workshop is co-organized by Alexis Ault (Utah State University), Sylvain Barbot (USC), and Caroline Seyler (USC). The format includes short science talks, breakout sessions to gather input on database structure, and open discussions designed to foster new collaborations and data-sharing frameworks. Additional details are available on the workshop website.

How to Apply: We encourage those working with or interested in fault friction and brittle rheology—from field to lab to models—to join us in shaping the next phase of the CRM. Interested attendees must complete a short application form by July 31, 2025. Capacity is limited to 30 in-person participants, selected based on their statement of interest and the potential of their contributions. Selected applicants will be notified by August 8th. Some travel support is available, with priority given to students and early-career researchers.
