Submit an abstract to STV Session GC074 - Mapping Earth’s Changing Surface
|
Earth’s surface topography and vegetation structure and changes provide information about climate change, natural hazards, ecosystem structure, and water availability. Precise measurement of both and their changes has wide ranging applications including for geologic hazards, ecosystems, cryosphere, hydrology, and coastal geomorphology. Lidar, radar, and stereoimaging are all methods for determining surface topography and vegetation structure. Each method contributes unique and complementary measurements. Lidar measurements provide canopy height and ground models but can be sparse. Stereoimaging provides digital surface models over broad areas. Both lidar and stereoimaging require clear sky. Radar provides broad area coverage while penetrating clouds and can indirectly measure vegetation 3-dimensional structure. This session will cover needed spatial and temporal scales to meet science challenges. Abstracts that demonstrate needed measurements or the fusion of measurements that address the science challenges are encouraged as are ones outlining data fusions benefits and techniques.

The abstract submission deadline is July 30, 2025, 23:59 ET/03:59 UTC.

We look forward to seeing you at AGU.

Job Posting: Pacific Northwest Seismic Network External Engagement Lead
|
The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network seeks a skilled communicator and strategic thinker to lead our External Engagement Team. PNSN’s mission is to monitor the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region for earthquakes and other hazardous events and provide timely, accurate, and authoritative earthquake information to local, state, and federal officials and to the public. PNSN is the premier source of vetted information about earthquake and volcano hazards in the PNW, and we envision that the person who fills this position of External Engagement Lead, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network will have a prominent role in the communication of and preparation for seismic events in our region.
|
Our ideal candidate has experience communicating complex scientific or engineering topics to a wide spectrum of audiences. In addition, they can plan and execute a long-term strategy that includes pursuing key partnerships, managing science communications via our website and traditional and social media, interacting with UW’s offices of government relations, news, and development, and being an advocate and spokesperson for earthquake awareness throughout the Pacific Northwest.
|
Duties and activities may include (but are not limited to):
|
- Leading strategic planning related to all external engagement goals which includes acting as an integral partner of state-level earthquake safety programs and engaging in cooperative planning of long-range efforts with the federal government such as ShakeAlert.
- Serving as social and traditional media coordinator as well as web content manager.
- Developing and carrying out education, outreach, and advocacy strategy and planning on behalf of PNSN, including supervision of regular staff and student employee efforts.
- Acting as a spokesperson for and outward-facing representative of the PNSN in multiple ways, including as liaison to legislatures and other branches and agencies of government at all levels, many other key partners public and private, and the people of the Pacific Northwest.
