[SZ4D] Apply Now for Travel Assistance to Workshops in Chile!

Limited travel assistance is available for two upcoming workshops that may be of interest to the SZ4D community. Through SZNet, international collaborations with SZ4D that focus on the Chilean margin are being supported by offering limited travel assistance for US-based scientists to participate in one or two of the Chile-based workshops organized by partner networks. Details for each workshop are included below.

Application Deadline: August 18, 2025

Please note that completing this form is NOT a registration to attend either workshop. To register, please refer to the workshop websites linked below.

Funding
SZNet will cover the cost of round-trip airfare to the workshop location from the United States following ordinary NSF guidelines. Participants are responsible for covering all other expenses, including lodging, meals, local transportation, and other associated travel expenses. Travel support is provided through SZNet, which is funded by the National Science Foundation AccelNet program under award 2301732.

Information for Applicants
All US-based researchers planning to attend either or both of the workshops are eligible to apply. We welcome applications from individuals at any career stage, including current students.

To apply, applicants will need to submit the application through the travel grant application portal. This form will prompt applicants to describe their scientific contributions to the workshop(s), and how participation aligns with their research or career goals. Applications will be reviewed by an evaluation committee after the application deadline. Successful applicants will be notified by September 1.

The travel assistance application will close on August 18th, 2025.

On behalf of Brittany A. Erickson, University of Oregon

Postdoctoral Researcher in Fault Mechanics

The University of California, Davis, in collaboration with the University of Oregon, seeks a postdoctoral researcher to join an NSF-funded project investigating the roles of cohesion, permeability evolution, and fluid flow in slow slip event (SSE) dynamics. The postdoc will work closely with PIs Amanda Thomas and Brittany Erickson, along with collaborators, to develop and run high-performance numerical simulations of fault slip.

The research will involve developing physics-based parameterizations of cohesion and permeability using experimental constraints, implementing and testing these formulations in both simplified models and conducting 2D and 3D simulations of SSEs. These models will be used to investigate the mechanisms driving slow slip dynamics in Cascadia and other subduction zones. This position offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of experimental rock mechanics, earthquake physics, and large-scale computational modeling to address fundamental questions about fault zone processes.

Appointment: Full-time, 1-year term with possible renewal for up to three years; salary per UC postdoctoral scale plus benefits.

For consideration, send a single PDF with cover letter, CV, and three references to amthom@ucdavis.edu. Review of submissions will begin September 15th and will continue until the position is filled.
