Dear Colleagues,

The Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC) is a collaborative research and education hub that brings together experts across geoscience and related fields to advance our understanding of earthquake processes and apply that knowledge to reduce their impacts on society in California and beyond. SCEC has a new look — to reflect our expanded study area which now encompasses the entire Pacific-North American plate boundary.

For over 30 years, the SCEC Annual Meeting has convened a global community involved in earthquake-related research, education, and outreach. Our annual meetings showcase SCEC-funded research and projects, fostering collaboration among scientists, stakeholders, and funders. Early career scientists and students comprise over 40% of attendees. Featured speakers are researchers from both within and outside SCEC whose work challenges and inspires future SCEC directions.

The 2024 SCEC Annual Meeting will be held at the Hilton Palm Springs from September 8-11. The program features plenary sessions with invited talks, moderated discussions, and the very popular Distinguished Lecture on Sunday afternoon. The meeting will focus on addressing key science questions about the San Andreas Fault System to improve earthquake science and hazard analysis. Together we will review results from the 2024 SCEC Science Plan and set priorities for the coming year. The community is invited to contribute to the Center's future direction and share their work through poster presentations — both in person and virtually via the online poster gallery.
Visit the SCEC2024 meeting website for detailed information about the meeting sessions, registration, fees, travel support opportunities, COVID guidelines, and more. Note the meeting deadlines are fast approaching:
  • The early registration deadline is August 19, 2024 (5:00 pm Pacific Time). After August 19, there is a late registration fee, and late registrants will not be included in the printed program. See here for instructions to register and meeting fees.
  • The abstract deadline is also August 19, 2024 (5:00 pm Pacific Time). Log in to SCEC to submit an abstract for inclusion in the SCEC2024 program. There is no fee to submit a poster abstract but space is limited so only one abstract will be accepted per first author. (Check out the 2023 SCEC Annual Meeting poster archive for a sense of the poster presentation format.)
We look forward to seeing your work, and to an engaging and productive meeting!

Sincerely,
SCEC Meetings Team
NEW CENTER NEW LOOK. The SCEC website(s) have a new look and some new URLs.
  • www.scec.org remains the primary source for public news, events, research and education updates, and organizational information. We will add content as it becomes available to feature the SCEC community, their stories, and new programs and initiatives.
  • You may be directed to log in to pages at central.scec.org to transact SCEC business (such as submitting or reviewing proposals, registering for meetings and submitting abstracts, updating your profile, registering publications, etc). Your dashboard will be your jumping off point.
  • From 1991-2023, SCEC focused on Southern California as its natural laboratory. The archives of those earlier efforts are valuable and are preserved at southern.scec.org.
NEW MAILING LIST. SCEC migrated to a new mailing list provider. To ensure delivery of future SCEC announcements, please add scec-mailing-list@maillist.scec.org to your contacts.
