We welcome theoretical, laboratory, field, and/or system-level approaches to address one or more grand challenges in disciplines that complement existing research strengths of the Department. This position will expand on our recent hiring and strengthen our department’s capacities to initiate investigations that provide process-level knowledge within environmental geosciences to address these challenges.
The Solid Earth and Planetary Geoscience position is seeking candidates to address grand challenges related to (but not limited to): Formation and evolution of crust and mantle of the Earth and other planetary bodies; Deep planetary processes and conditions including their linkages to surface processes; Cycling of volatiles and critical elements; Fundamental studies of plate boundary processes. We welcome experimental, field, computational, or combined approaches to address one or more of these challenges. The successful applicant will lead a vibrant, cutting-edge research program that should complement existing research strengths of the Department of Geology & Geophysics.

Postdoc opportunities at Southern University of Science and Technology
The Seismic Imaging Lab in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology invites applicants for several positions of postdoctoral researchers and research assistant/associate professors, who will be supported and mentored by Prof. Hejun Zhu. Our research group works on (1) exploring Earth’s physical properties and tectonic evolution using advanced seismic imaging technologies; and (2) monitoring crustal responses to a variety of environmental changes, such as groundwater fluctuation, icesheet melting, etc. These researchers will work on projects related to continental-scale tomography for crustal and mantle structures, active and passive source monitoring for environmental processes, etc. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Seismology or a related field by the time of hire. The successful applicant should have experience with seismic modeling and imaging techniques (such as full waveform inversion) or ambient noise data analysis, and high performance computing (HPC). The positions are initially for two years, and are renewable depending upon performance.
Applicants should submit a CV listing their publications along with a statement of research interests and a cover letter which includes contact information for three professional references, to Prof. Hejun Zhu (zhuhj@sustech.edu.cn). Review of applications will start immediately, and this position will remain open until filled. Please contact Prof. Hejun Zhu (zhuhj@sustech.edu.cn) for more information about these positions.

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) and the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering & Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) seek to hire a Professor (tenured) for the Jackson Endowed Chair in Computational Geosciences. We seek an outstanding scholar who will conduct cutting-edge research to develop, advance, and apply innovative and transformational computational approaches in the geosciences. The successful candidate will be appointed jointly between EPS and the Oden Institute, with 50% of the candidate’s teaching dedicated to the EPS department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching mission, and 50% of the teaching in the Oden Institute’s graduate program in Computational Science, Engineering and Mathematics. We thus seek a candidate whose research and teaching skills lie at the forefront of both the computational sciences and Earth and planetary sciences.
The Oden Institute is an interdisciplinary unit that draws its faculty from across five of UT’s schools and colleges. As one of the global leaders in interdisciplinary computational science, engineering, and mathematics, the Oden Institute’s mission is to provide the interdisciplinary environment that enables outstanding research, fosters high-impact collaborations, and advances graduate education in the field of computational science and engineering. The Department of Earth and Planetary Science is one of the largest and top ranked geoscience departments of the nation. EPS is part of the Jackson School of Geosciences (JSG), which also includes the Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) and the Bureau of Economic Geology. Both JSG and Oden also partner with other UT entities including within the Cockrell School of Engineering, the College of Natural Sciences, the Texas Advanced Computing Center, the Center for Planetary Systems Habitability, and the Center for Space Research, and have extensive external partnerships nationally and internationally. The University of Texas at Austin is an Equal Opportunity Employer located in a thriving metropolitan area with a dynamic, multicultural community of 2.5 million people.
A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. The successful applicant is expected to establish a vibrant, externally funded research program.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, CV including list of publications, three page research statement including a broader vision for computational geoscience, a teaching and mentoring statement, and a list of three individuals who would be able to provide letters of reference. Submit copies of these materials online via
