Falling forward, Statewide!

Dear SCEC community,

We hope your fall is going well.

The first annual meeting of the Statewide California Earthquake Center was a great success and demonstrated the continuing vitality, innovation, and impact of SCEC activities and our community. From the Sunday’s sessions covering the state of the center, research accomplishments, and distinguished lecture; through all the inspirational talks and follow-up discussions; the exciting new results and vibrant interactions in the poster sessions, all the way to the wrap up session that contributed to updating the collaboration plan for the coming year, the SCEC community was engaged, energetic, and resourceful. You can visit the SCEC2024 meeting archive to view talks and posters. We want to thank everyone who made the 2024 annual meeting such a success, and our sponsors who continue to support the Statewide Center at NSF, USGS, NASA, DOE, PG&E, FEMA, and Cal OES! We extend special thanks to the SCEC staff from the Operations and Engagement & Education teams who organized and created the framework in which all of this can happen. When meetings run so smoothly it is too easy not to appreciate the many challenges that must be met to make it work so well. Once again, they did a superb job, and we are grateful for their dedicated and highly professional work.

The Statewide Center has a new Organizational Structure to streamline leadership, improve the development & implementation of activities, and increase participation & representation. As part of the reorganization, the Board of Directors of the Statewide Center has 10 officers (including the chair Tim Dawson and vice chair Rachel Abercrombie) that are elected every 2 years and lead different Board activities. We are increasing from 2 to 4 the At-Large Board members from participating institutions. We remind participating institutions to renew their status and encourage others to join using the online form https://forms.gle/sTyus1mo38w6Jvwz6. If you belong to a participating institution and would like to be on the SCEC Board of Directors, please send a message to Tim, Rachel, or Camilla Cattania (interim Board officer for stakeholder engagement). Visit www.scec.org/institutions for more information on this and additional updates.

We thank the new Science Steering Committee (SSC), chaired by Greg Beroza (Stanford), for their work to update the Year-2 Science Plan of SCEC to reflect feedback from the annual meeting that captures the new and exciting opportunities that come with the Statewide scope of the center and other advances in earthquake science. The request for proposal has just been announced (www.scec.org/scienceplan), and we look forward to receiving your proposals that are the essential element for turning the Science Plan into a set of efforts that comprise the Collaboration Plan for 2025. The evaluation of the proposals received will be done by a new Proposal Review Committee (PRC), chaired by Alice Gabriel (UCSD). We received many volunteers and nominations for the PRC since the annual meeting and are in the process of finalizing their membership in October to prepare for the next review cycle.

The process of recruiting a Director Designate who will lead SCEC beyond the current phase of the Center is in progress. The search committees at the Dept. of Earth Sci. at USC and SCEC Board of Directors concluded their work and converged on a candidate for the Director Designate. The follow-up process between the USC administration and the candidate has begun and we will provide an update with additional details when there is news we can share.

SCEC’s Engagement & Education team has coordinated registration and messaging for Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills since 2008, with support from FEMA nationally and Cal OES in California. This year’s International ShakeOut day is October 17, and more than 17 million people across the U.S. are already registered! We encourage all SCEC institutions to register and spread the word. Those at universities may want to review ShakeOut’s guidance for Higher Education. You can also register your household and encourage other organizations you are involved to participate (community groups, clubs, etc.). SCEC staff and our Earthquake Country Alliance partners are coordinating media events on ShakeOut morning at a Southern California Edison facility and at the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab.

The Quakeworx Science gateway, which is a special project of SCEC with partner institutions supported by the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure of NSF, provides a platform for the community to use open-source computational tools for earthquake simulations and reduce barriers to new users. Quakeworx currently has interfaces for the following computational codes: SeisSol, Tandem, MooseFarm, UCERF-ETAS and PyCSEP. Several additional codes are in the process of being added to Quakeworx. A training workshop that includes demonstrations of how to use a number of codes from within the gateway is planned for early 2025. Visit https://quakeworx.org/ for more information.

Regards,
Yehuda Ben-Zion (SCEC Director)
Greg Beroza (SCEC co-Director)
