USGS Earthquake Hazards Program seeks Assistant Coordinator
The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program (EHP) is advertising a position as Assistant Program Coordinator. The position is GS-14 level with multiple possible duty locations at the USGS offices in Reston, VA, Golden, CO; Pasadena, CA and at Moffett Field in Mountain View, CA. Relocation expenses may be covered. Separate application links are provided below for U.S. Citizens and for most current Federal staff; in both cases, the application period closes January 3 or when 100 applications have been received, whichever comes first.
The EHP provides the scientific information, situational awareness, and knowledge necessary to reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses from earthquakes and earthquake-induced hazards. The EHP monitors and reports on earthquakes, assesses earthquake impacts and hazards, and conducts targeted research on the causes and effects of earthquakes. We undertake these activities as part of the larger National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP), a four-agency partnership established by Congress. Further information about the program’s diverse activities and priorities can be found on the program web site and in a newly developed Decadal Science Strategy.
As a Geophysicist within the Natural Hazards Mission Area - Earthquake Hazards Program, you will work within an eight-person program office, helping to provide scientific, programmatic, and management leadership and oversight of the Program’s earthquake hazards and risk assessments, and of targeted research on earthquake physics, occurrence, effects, and forecasting. Specific duties will include:
- Working with Senior Science Advisor for Earthquake and Geologic Hazards and EHP staff to oversee the program’s activities, and to develop, communicate and implement strategies, policies, and priorities of the program.
- Interacting with EHP-supported scientists and projects within the USGS, with externally supported researchers and research centers, and with a variety of partner, stakeholder, and user organizations and groups.
- Coordinating relevant activities with other programs and elements of the USGS and partner agencies. Serving as a liaison to external agencies, organizations, groups and research centers, and providing oversight of coordinated research activities.
- Contributing to ensuring that earthquake hazard information meets stakeholder needs to inform decision‐making to reduce risk, including representing the program office to the public, media, stakeholder groups, and federal partners.

3 PhD positions in earthquake seismology and hydromechanics at ETH Zurich
The Institute of Geophysics at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences of ETH Zurich has three open PhD positions in earthquake seismology and hydromechanics. The candidates will be studying seismogenic processes on a natural fault zone, in a large-scale fault activation project at the BedrettoLab.
The Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies ("BedrettoLab") is a unique research facility of ETH Zurich that allows studying earthquake physics, hydromechanics and deep geothermal energy under in-situ conditions. In the context of the Fault Activation and Earthquake Rupture (FEAR) project, we are working to induce and study earthquakes with magnitudes of ~1.0 on a natural Alpine fault zone. The BedrettoLab provides direct access to the target fault zone at a depth of ~1km, such that we can place monitoring equipment directly on and around the fault zone. Because of this direct access, we can potentially observe, model and understand earthquake dynamic and hydromechanic processes in exceptional detail. In this context we are looking for 3 highly motivated candidates to embark on a PhD to study the seismicity (PhD #1), the hydromechanics (PhD #2), and the rupture dynamics (PhD #3) of a natural, complex fault zone. The 3 successful PhD candidates will join the Bedretto Team, a large, international team of scientists, who together strive to advance our understanding of fault zone processes and earthquake physics. The PhD programs will focus on data from the major upcoming experiments of the FEAR project, planned between November 2024 and December 2026. Please follow the above links for more information and to apply.
