PhD Scholarships in Ground Motion Simulation, Validation, and Applications
Two PhD scholarships are available for multiple topics associated with earthquake-induced ground-motion and site response prediction utilizing simulation-based methods. The overarching aim in all specific project instances is to advance understanding of ground-motion phenomena and predictive ability through hybrid broadband simulations. In some instances, this is directly through the use of simulations for seismic hazard analysis, and in other instances through the use of simulations to constrain empirical ground-motion models for parameter combinations that observational data are deficient. The projects are based at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, but PhD students will also interact with national and international collaborators.
Relevant background: Applicants should have a background in Civil Engineering, Geophysics, or related disciplines. High competency in data analysis, numerical modelling, and programming is desired.
PhD Scholarship Details: This scholarship includes a $35,000 NZD/year stipend (tax-free) and all university tuition and fees for the three-year duration of the PhD project.
Application Details: If interested in applying, please contact brendon.bradley@canterbury.ac.nz with the email title “PhD Scholarship in ground-motion simulation, validation, and applications” and attach the following documents: (1) CV; (2) cover letter; and (3) any digital copies of journal/conference papers and/or theses you have authored. Applications close 15 April 2025, but will be reviewed as they are submitted. The projects are expected to start between 1 July – 1 October 2025, though a delayed start maybe possible depending on individual circumstances.

PyLith Hackathon Application Now Open
We are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the PyLith Hackathon.
To further the development of the crustal deformation modeling code PyLith and its user community, current users and developers of PyLith will be working side-by-side over 5 days. Participants will be organized into small project teams to add functionality or examples to PyLith or related software.

SSA Environmental Seismology Topical Conference
This conference will explore marked advances in extracting information from seismic data to investigate phenomena that include cryosphere, ocean, and groundwater dynamics, fluvial processes, cyclones, landslides, erosion, and more. Seismology provides time-continuous data, access to remote regions and tools to monitor earthquakes and explosions. These tools to image the subsurface have been repurposed by scientists from marine mammal biologists to hydrologists. In addition, seismological methods have been central to energy exploration and development.
Abstract submission for the meeting will open 1 April 2025 and close 20 May 2025.
SSA will award three travel grants to student and early-career members attending the conference. Applications for travel grants will be open from 1-30 April 2025.
