Current and future research collaborations

SCEC Director Yehuda Ben-Zion (right) and Co-Director Greg Beroza (left)SCEC leadership groups have been very busy in recent months–updating SCEC’s bylaws, reviewing proposals to the SCEC research program, and seeking new and diverse funding streams. In addition, we have been coordinating the SCEC Community’s response to the NSF Dear Colleague Letter for future earthquake research centers.  This provides an opportunity to rethink the scope of our research, and how we manage a large vibrant, agile collaboration that can adapt to new advances.

SCEC Community

Thoughts on future earthquake research center(s)

On January 17 NSF issued the anticipated Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) requesting input on formulating the solicitation for Future Research Center(s) to Coordinate Research in Fundamental Earthquake Processes. Various groups within the SCEC community are exploring how we may broaden and deepen our future earthquake research endeavors by writing white papers. We have compiled a list of white papers we know are in progress, and will link to more as they become available. These ideas—and others that emerge from the SCEC community—will be discussed and refined as we develop together the intellectual scope of the next phase of the Center.

Project Highlight

SCEC to run on DOE Summit and Theta in 2020

xample of large-scale simulations of advanced nonlinear material behavior (Roten et al. 2019).SCEC is a leader in research that integrates science results and new technologies into broad impact products to improve seismic hazard assessment. For instance, by designing and building CyberShake, our physics-based probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) software, we have redefined the state of the art for understanding and anticipating low-frequency (0–1 Hz) strong motions across most of California. We continue to take our SCEC physics-based computational software, including CyberShake, to the next level by extending its capabilities to resolve shaking estimates and related uncertainties across a broadband range of frequencies of engineering interest (i.e., 0–20 Hz). We conduct research as we implement new physical models and tools into software, and regularly validate our results against empirical datasets.
