SCEC Thriving During Challenging Times

September was the National Preparedness Month, when communities were reminded of the importance of preparing for disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic puts into perspective just how unpredictable evolving disasters are and how far-reaching their impact can be. This is not news for those of us studying earthquakes. SCEC’s mission is to improve the understanding of earthquakes and to translate that knowledge to useful products so communities can better prepare, survive and recover from damaging earthquakes and related cascading hazards. This year has shown that SCEC continues to accomplish its mission and to thrive during challenging times.  [read full article]

SCEC Provides Online Options for 2020 ShakeOut Participation

SCEC's Communication, Education, and Outreach program has coordinated Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills since 2008, in partnership with local, national, and international colleagues and organizations. 2020 has posed many challenges, including for how traditionally in-person drills can be held safely, but also opportunities for new ways of practicing earthquake safety, safely, together – including online drills!  The article includes links to new presentations for leading online or in-person drills are now available, and information for joining the "Great Online ShakeOut" on Thursday morning, 10/15.

Earthquake Country Alliance Virtual Activities in 2020

The SCEC Communication, Education, and Outreach program’s primary structure for partnerships and community outreach throughout California is the Earthquake Country Alliance (ECA). Because of COVID-19, ECA has shifted many of its activities to online modes, with recordings now available, including our Safer At Home Webinar Series, regional online workshops, and many new resources. Undergraduate Research and Mentoring Opportunities During the Pandemic and Beyond

SCEC’s Internships provide meaningful research experiences and resources for undergraduate students. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has posed many challenges for summer research programs. For SCEC, this meant canceling the in-person SURE and UseIT programs. To fill this research experience gap, SCEC created the Supported Opportunities for Undergraduates and Researchers to Collaborate on Earthquake Science (SOURCES) Program, a remotely-mentored research experience to college students nationwide, regardless of geographic location or availability of local researchers.  [read full article]

Michele Cooke Receives Inclusive Geoscience Teaching Award

The International Association for Geoscience Diversity recently named SCEC Community scientist and UMass Amherst faculty member Michele Cooke as the recipient of its 2020 Inclusive Geoscience Education and Research Award. Organizers recognized Dr. Cook as a “foundational leader in accessible and inclusive geoscience teaching in both the classroom and field for over 20 years, all while maintaining a successful research career in geomechanics and structural geology."  [read full article]

SCEC2020: A new platform for science collaboration

Over 600 people gathered online for the 30th SCEC Annual Meeting (September 14-17, 2020) to share results and to plan future science directions for the Center. The SCEC team developed an innovative online meeting platform by seamlessly integrating Zoom and YouTube with the latest web technologies. With a click of a button on the meeting website, attendees could browse posters, jump from one active discussion to another, or listen to talks in a plenary session. The online poster gallery included hundreds of videos to showcase new results and demonstration of research tools. The new online capabilities developed for SCEC2020 have set a high bar for future collaboration meetings, whether online or in-person.  [read full article]

SCEC Workshop: Multi-scale seismic velocity models—Imaging and validation studies

The third SCEC Community Velocity Model (CVM) workshop was held on September 1, 2020 to identify key research areas to incorporate into the 2021 SCEC Science Plan and the next earthquake science center proposal. Topics explored during the workshop included the shallow structure, heterogeneity length scales, homogenization and effective medium approaches, model merging, model evaluation and validation, and uncertainty quantification. A scheme for model delivery, documentation, and open archiving, as well as the collection of more (densely sampled) data were deemed essential for making significant progress on improving the CVMs.  [read full article]

SCEC Workshop: Cajon Pass Earthquake Gate AreaProgress and Future Plans

SCEC defines Earthquake Gate Areas (EGA) as “regions of fault complexity conjectured to inhibit propagating ruptures, owing to dynamic conditions setup by proximal fault geometry and material properties, distributed deformation, and earthquake history." The purpose of the September 4, 2020 workshop was to present ongoing research in the Cajon Pass EGA and to establish science priorities for the remainder of SCEC5 and beyond. The workshop presentations and recommendations for additional Cajon Pass EGA investigations are summarized in the workshop report (now available online).  [read full article]

Know your faults – SCEC CFM fault association notifications

SCEC collaborators have developed a new, statistical way to rapidly identify the most likely fault (or sets of candidate faults) in the Community Fault Model (CFM) that generated an earthquake. For the first time ever, the information provided by sophisticated, near real-time seismic networks is automatically connected with the comprehensive 3D SCEC CFM. Members of the SCEC community can now sign up to receive SCEC CFM association information through email. This service will notify you each time there is an ≥M3 event and provide fault associations.  [read full article]
