Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES IN EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

ABOUT GRAND CHALLENGES INTERNS PROJECTS

Summary

Display in SCEC-VDO some of the important data sets used to construct UCERF3
  • UCERF3 fault models (alternative representations)
  • Catalog of large historic earthquakes (M ≥ 6) in California (1855-2011)
  • Instrumental catalog (M ≥ 2.5) used in UCERF3 smoothed seismicity map

Develop a visualization capability for exploring earthquake rupture forecasts

  • Visualize rupture sets on faults in 3D SCEC-VDO
  • Animate rupture sequences on faults in 4D SCEC-VDO
  • Compute earthquake shaking intensity maps in GIS and import them for SCEC-VDO display with rupture maps on faults

Produce 3D visualizations and 4D animations to educate the general public about earthquake rupture forecasts

  • CyberShake rupture sets (UCERF2)
  • Rupture sequences from earthquake simulators (RSQsim)
  • UCERF3 rupture sets

Produce a movie the UseIT Summer of 2012

Challenge Statement

Develop visualization capabilities based on SCEC-VDO and GIS that can display earthquake rupture forecasts, and publish visualization products that can be used to educate the general public about the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecasts, including the new forecasting model, UCERF3.
