Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

SCEC and EarthScope: A Workshop to Explore the Interaction

Dates: 14th and 15th October 2003 (Tuesday and Wednesday)
Location: USC
Conveners: Tom Henyey, USC; Tom Jordan, USC

The principal objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • To identify, in general terms, the types of data needed by SCEC in pursuit of its mission that EarthScope facilities can provide alone or in combination with other facilities/instrumentation.
  • To explore the role of SCEC in the design and operation of the southern California component of PBO and its relationship to SCIGN.
  • To explore how SCEC can assist CISN/TriNet in formulating plans for the design and operation of an enhanced (with the addition of EarthScope Bigfoot instruments) broadband network in southern California.
  • To specify the EarthScope Flexible Array requirements of potential regional (SCEC) crustal/upper mantle experiments in southern California.
  • To summarize the findings/recommendations from the Caltech September 22-23 workshop as they relate to EarthScope.
  • To review new projects/proposals already submitted to NSF EarthScope and/or Continental Dynamics, or that are in the serious planning stages, that bear on southern California and/or SCEC mission objectives.
  • To prioritize, in general terms, a series of EarthScope experiments (over 5 and 10 year time frames) that could make a substantial impact on SCEC's mission in southern California.

Each of the SCEC focus and disciplinary groups will address one or more of the foregoing bullets.

It is anticipated that EarthScope science will be carried out on a regional basis, and thus, in very general terms, the purpose of the October 14-15 workshop is to explore SCEC's role (as a regional consortium) in coordinating EarthScope activities in southern California.

The hotel for this workshop is the Embassy Suites Hotel Los Angeles International Airport North, 9801 Airport Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90045. Rooms are $119 per night.
