Summary

The Seismological Lab is seeking a seismologist to participate in the operation and development of the Caltech/USGS earthquake monitoring network (SCSN/CISN). This is a temporary full time position for one year, with the possibility of future funding. The duties will consist of participating in projects that involve enhancements and improvements of the seismological aspects of existing and new real-time products generated by SCSN/CISN. Job duties also include developing, testing, and maintaining innovative approaches and software to calibrate sensor systems, to improve data quality and reliability of acquisition of SCSN/CISN waveform data.

Job Duties

* Participate in the improvement of existing and the development of new algorithms to facilitate real-time analysis of SCSN/CISN data, including quality control and product reliability. Diagnose seismological data analysis issues related to real-time products such as moment tensor generation, earthquake locations and others

* Work with real-time operators to ensure completeness of the data archive. Will be responsible for troubleshooting of various aspects of the data acquisition systems and data completeness checks for real-time products such as ShakeMap.

* Work with field engineers to verify data and rectify any malfunctioning instruments. Perform comprehensive long period and short period calibration of broadband and strong motion data recorded at seismic stations. Will be responsible for digital seismological signal analysis for verification of sensor gain, orientation, and polarities, and identification of malfunctioning sensors.

* Assist with calibration of local and statewide seismological parameters such as magnitude and hypocenters. Will be responsible for calculating calibration corrections for seismological parameters and make statewide datasets of such corrections to facilitate uniform statewide parameter generation.

* Participate in special projects such as development of ultra-rapid source identification or early warning, and post-processing such as generation of movies of wave propagation.
