Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Fault Zones: Structure, Geomechanics and Fluid Flow - Call for Papers

Date: 11/28/2007

From Zoe Shipton, University of Glasgow ...

----------------------------------------------------------

Dear All
Apologies for multiple postings.

We'd like to draw your attention to the upcoming conference on Fault Zones: Structure, Geomechanics and Fluid Flow that will be held at the Geological Society, Burlington House, London, on the 16th to 18th of September 2008. Faults play a crucial role in controlling strain accumulation in the Earth’s crust. At the largest scale they control the form and evolution of sedimentary basins and at the smallest scale, the development of fault zones results in a change in the mechanical and hydrological properties of the fault rocks, thereby impacting on their mechanical strength and permeability. With recent advances in subsurface, modelling and field-based studies, this conference aims to bring together a diverse range of scientists and industrialists interested in fault growth, fault zone properties, fluid flow in faults, earthquake processes and fault mechanics. Industrial applications of the research range through earthquake prediction, groundwater resources, hydrocarbon production/exploitation, deep waste disposal and greenhouse gas storage/sequestration.

Keynote Speakers confirmed to-date include:
• Patience Cowie (University of Edinburgh)
• Paul Younger (University of Newcastle)
• Pradeep Talwani (University of South Carolina)
• Jon Caine (USGS)
• Conrad Childs (University College Dublin)

We would encourage you or any interested colleagues to submit an abstract (~200 words). Please email your abstract to Chris Jackson (c.jackson@imperial.ac.uk) or Zoe Shipton (zoe.shipton@ges.gla.ac.uk). Please pass on this e-mail to any colleagues (including other geoscience/engineering disciplines) who you think might be interested in submitting a paper.
The abstract submission deadline is 16th May 2008.

Registration and enquiries:
Kerri Deegan, Conference Manager, The Geological Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BG. Tel: +44 (0) 20 7434 9944. or Email: kerri.deegan@geolsoc.org.uk

Thanks
Zoe
