Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Postdoctoral Researcher: Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Date: 01/15/2008

We seek to fill a position at the Postdoctoral Researcher level to work as part of the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) team at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the University of California San Diego (UCSD), http://scripps.ucsd.edu/. The position will primarily involve calibration and validation of ICESat data at calibration sites we have previously established on stable reference surfaces (the salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah). The chosen candidate for this position will work on three separate aspects of the project: ongoing validation of ICESat measurements using existing survey data from our calibration sites; the design and implementation of an experiment to calibrate ICESat reflectance measurements; and resurveys of the Bonneville (and/or Uyuni) Salt Flat using kinematic GPS, including the installation of a permanent GPS station on the salt flats to identify and measure seasonal variability of surface elevation. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in GPS and laser altimetry and have a solid understanding of geodesy. Subject to the interests of the successful candidate, there will also be opportunities to work on other ICESat-related projects on the ice sheets.

Salary will be determined by the University commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the University of California pay scale, plus benefits. The successful candidate is expected to start by July 1st 2008, although this is negotiable. The position is for one year, with renewal for a second year by mutual agreement. Applications should be sent electronically (application letter, CV and a list of three referees) to Helen Amanda Fricker (hafricker@ucsd.edu) by February 29th 2008. A brief notice of intent of application before this date would be appreciated.

UCSD is an Equal Opportunity Employer, with a strong institutional commitment to excellence through diversity.
