Seismology Position at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland (www.seismo.ethz.ch), solicits applications for a Seismologist at a junior or intermediate level. We are looking for a highly motivated individual that can bridge scientific and networking aspects of seismology, with expertise in software development and real-time seismic data processing. Additional expertise in several of the following areas is expected: waveform modeling, computational seismology, source location and quantification, seismic instrumentation, data mining, computer hardware, databases, and IP data communications.

The successful candidate will 1) share responsibility for routine acquisition, processing and archival of seismic waveform data, and 2) participate in the research, development and network implementation of special projects such as ultra-rapid source identification and quantification; ShakeMaps; early warning; and novel methods of data dissemination to the public and the scientific community.

Candidates must have a PhD in geoscience, engineering or a related field, or at least 5 years experience within a seismic network. He or she is expected to participate in the routine location and alarm duties of the SED, and there is scope for teaching and student supervision if desired. Excellent knowledge of modern programming languages such as Java or C++, as well as shell-scripting in a Linux environment is an important requirement. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic team of scientists and system administrators. Working languages are English and German. Excellent writing and communication skills and a high level of initiative are required.
