Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Manuscripts for the JGR Special Section on Slow Slip and Tremor

Date: 05/08/2008

A reminder from Joan Gomberg, USGS:

Manuscripts for the JGR Special Section on "The Phenomenology, Underlying Processes, and Hazard Implications of Slow Slip, Tremor and Earthquakes" may be submitted July 1 to September 1, 2008. If you are considering a submission, please send a tentative title and author list to Joan Gomberg at gomberg@usgs.gov as soon as possible. When you are ready to submit, please use the online GEMS system (see http://www.agu.org/pubs/submit_to_AGU.html) and use the link indicating your manuscript is being submitted for this Special Section. Questions may be addressed to Joan Gomberg, Wendy McCausland (wmccausland@usgs.gov) or Hitoshi Hirose (hirose@bosai.go.jp)

This Special Section focuses on one of the most exciting new discoveries in the Earth sciences -- the phenomena of slow slip and tremor. Slow slip refers to fault motion that occurs over many seconds to months without radiating seismic waves, measurable using geodetic methods. Tremor is seismic wave energy that radiates at low amplitudes for long durations, detectable on sensors tuned to record high frequencies. Slow slip and tremor represent modes of fault motion that differ from that in earthquakes. This special section will document these new scientific mysteries, potential explanations, and their implications for earthquake hazards.
