IRIS Seeking Director of Projects for DMS

The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) seeks an experienced individual to serve as the Director of Projects for the IRIS Data Management System (DMS). This senior level position will report to the IRIS DMS Program Manager and will help define, initiate and guide new and existing projects within the IRIS DMS and EarthScope/USArray projects. This position will be based at the IRIS Data Management Center (DMC) in Seattle. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated self-starter to be a part of a premier international seismological data center and help define its future services and capabilities.

In collaboration with DMC staff and the user community, the selected applicant will perform the following duties:

* Coordinate input from the seismological community and help prioritize projects that the DMS undertakes.

* Solicit broad input from the seismological community and IRIS staff in order to help define project specifications.

* Assume the responsibility for managing projects within the IRIS DMS drawing from internal and external resources

* Work closely with the community and DMS staff in the definition, prototyping, and production of value added products that benefit a broad spectrum of users including seismologists, earth scientists and potentially non-scientists.

* Participate in the development of budgets, maintain project management tracking tools, and generate reports that provide status of projects.

Successful applicants should have an understanding of modern seismological practices and techniques. A Ph.D. in seismology is preferred however candidates with a Masters degree in geophysics will be considered. Applicants should have more than 5 years of experience in managing significant projects. Applicants should have an understanding of the software development lifecycle and quality assurance concepts. Experience with the UNIX operating system (or its variants) is essential. Experience in state of the art web services concepts would be beneficial. Experience in using applications such as MatLab and SAC would be advantageous. Experience in Relational Database technologies is also important.

IRIS is a university consortium with more than 100 institutional members. IRIS is funded by the National Science Foundation to support facilities for research in seismology and the Earth Sciences.
