Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Invitation to a gathering in memory of Leon Knopoff on Thursday, May 5, at 3:30 pm at the UCLA Faculty Center

Date: 04/15/2011

Dear Friends and Colleagues of Leon,

We would like to invite you to a gathering to commemorate the life of Leon Knopoff on Thursday afternoon, May 5, 2011, at 3:30 pm at the UCLA Faculty Center in the California Room. Following the speakers, there will be a reception.

We would like to let you know that we plan to videotape the speakers for posting on a website dedicated to Leon's memory so that you will be able to hear the tributes and reminiscences at a later date, if you are unable to attend. The website will include photos shown at the gathering and other information about Leon's life and accomplishments. After May 5 we will let you know the address of the website.

In order for us to have an idea of how many to expect, please let us know if you plan to attend (including the number), by sending an email to joanneknopoff@gmail.com (Do not click Reply if this email was not sent from that address.) A reply by April 20 or, preferably, sooner would be appreciated, if you know your plans by then.

Those of you who are scientists in fields related to Leon's interests might like to know that a future professional gathering is planned to honor his achievements, probably at a national conference. We will inform you of the details once they are finalized.

If you join us and do not have a UCLA parking permit, you will need to stop at the kiosk off Hilgard Avenue at Westholme and--sorry!--pay a $10 parking fee. You will be directed to park in nearby Lot 2. (If you have a handicap placard, the fee is only $3, and you may ask to park in Lot A, beside the Faculty Center, if there is room.) Please allow enough time to find a parking space and to arrive a few minutes early. Anyone with a permit from another UC campus can request complimentary parking.

You may have seen some of the obituary articles that have been written about Leon and might like to see others; you will find links to many of them below our names.

Apologies, should you receive more than one copy of this invitation.

With best regards,

Joanne Knopoff, Prof. David Jackson, Prof. Paul Davis
