This fulltime academic staff position will focus on the development of the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory's (BSL) Earthquake Research Affiliates (ERA) Program (http://seismo.berkeley.edu/ERA/). The ERA program is designed to inspire, nurture and sustain a vibrant public-private, industrial-academic community focused on the development and use of innovative earthquake information products including alert services and other novel seismological measurement technologies. The program is designed to promote the use of new research and technology, and provide a forum for inviting optimal and essential users to participate in the development and testing of new technologies, through the development of a targeted educational outreach program. The successful applicant will be responsible, with the Director, for revenue generation for BSL, largely through the ERA program by securing and recruiting 5 or more affiliates per year. He/she will interface with existing ERA members and develop new members. The responsibilities will include maintaining contacts and developing new contacts within local companies and institutions; meeting with ERA members and potential members at the BSL and also in their home offices to educate them about earthquake hazards and the tools available to mitigae them; giving presentations about the BSL and its ongoing research and technical development activities; organizing events for ERA members; and any other educational, outreach, management or other activities that are needed to further the goals of the ERA program. Based on these interactions with ERA partners, he/she will help guide research into real-time earthquake information product development at the BSL to better serve the ERA partners and the public. Depending on available time, there is also the option to participate in other activities at the BSL. These might include, but are not limited to, participation in the research, development and implementation of real-time earthquake products, development and participation in our broader education and outreach program, and/or conducting any other kind of geophysical research. These additional duties will be determined through agreement with the Director.

The successful applicant must be comfortable as a public spokesperson for the BSL. He/she will be meeting ERA members and potential members to educate them about BSL research activities and elicit their input into future BSL research activity. This will include giving presentations, both to the public, to technically sophisticated audiences and within the BSL; organizing events and arranging participation; managing the expectations of ERA members and the deliverables of the BSL. Advanced training in the sciences up to and inlcuding a PhD is a strong preference. The position is available immediately. The Berkeley Seismology Laboratory seeks candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
