Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Postdoc Opportunities in Seismology

Date: 11/13/2013

Forwarded postdoc opportunities from P. Martin Mai, KAUST:

We seek highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to augment and strengthen our team in Computational Earthquake Seismology at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). The CES research group is part of the Earth Sciences & Engineering program in the Division of Physical Sciences & Engineering at KAUST.

KAUST (http://www.kaust.edu.sa) is an international, graduate research university dedicated to advancing science and technology through interdisciplinary research, education, and innovation. Located on the shores of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia, KAUST offers superb research facilities, generous assured research funding, and internationally competitive salaries. The university attracts top international faculty, scientists, engineers, and students to conduct fundamental and goal-oriented research to address the world’s pressing scientific and technological challenges related to the sustainability of water, food, energy, and the environment.

The open postdoctoral positions fall within the broad domain of (earthquake) seismology. Research topics include advanced earthquake source imaging, ground-motion simulations for earthquake engineering applications, and mapping Earth structure using broadband seismic recordings. Particular consideration will be given to candidates with experience in imaging Earth structure at various scales using novel techniques (joint inversion of various data sets, ambient-noise tomography, and including rigorous uncertainty quantification). Through our collaboration with the Saudi Geological Survey, we have access to broadband seismic data recorded on 140+ stations in Saudi Arabia, providing an unprecedented data set for this region.  Successful applicants will have access to the on-site super-computer, high-end workstations, and advanced data processing & visualization facilities. In addition, we provide close collaborations within the Earth Science program (http://erse.kaust.edu.sa) and the program of Applied Mathematics & Computer Science, as well as with national and international institutions. For more details, please visit http://ces.kaust.edu.sa.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in geophysics, physics, engineering, or computational sciences. Successful candidates should have strong analytical skills, and experience in programming, data analysis, geophysical modeling and visualization. Fluency in English is mandatory. Good interpersonal skills, willingness to work in a team of several researchers and students, and ability to present the work at international conferences are expected.

Post-doctoral fellows will receive an experience-dependent competitive salary, free housing, free medical insurance, and free schooling for children. Selection for positions will start immediately, and continue until positions are filled.

To apply, please send (as PDFs) your CV, list of publications, a statement of  research interests, and the names and addresses of at least two referees to Prof. P. Martin Mai (martin.mai@kaust.edu.sa).
