Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the Special Session (description below) we are organizing in the SSA 2014 meeting that will take place 30 April – 2 May, 2014, Anchorage, Alaska.  The topic of the session moves in the direction to integrate Earthquake Scientists and Earthquake Engineers, with strong emphasis placed on practical applications, characterised by a successful integration of seismological and engineering advancements, tailored to the mitigation of seismic risk. The session will be supported by invited talks specially dedicated to it, such as Norm Abrahamson (UC Berkeley/Pacific Gas & Electric Co), Ralph Archuleta (UCSB), Nicolas Luco (USGS), Muneo Hori (ERI, Uiniversity of Tokyo), Sinan Akkar (KOERI). We encourage contributions from any aspect related to this topic. We are looking forward to your submission and an exciting session.

Tittle: From the Earthquake Source to Damage of Buildings: Bridging the Gap between Seismology and Earthquake Engineering

Summary:
Seismologists and engineers with the capability to understand the scientific and technical features of physical and numerical models including the physics of earthquake source, wave propagation effects, site specific ground motion predictions and seismic vulnerability of structures, are key professional figures within the framework of seismic risk assessment and mitigation studies. Building these professional skills requires seamless cooperative efforts between earthquake scientists and earthquake engineers, and this expertise is routinely employed and optimised nowadays by a number of governmental, academic and industrial stakeholders. With the aim of gathering and promoting the discussion amongst the aforementioned scientists and engineers, we welcome in this session innovative studies on the topics mentioned above, with strong emphasis placed on practical applications, characterised by a successful integration of seismological and engineering advancements, tailored to the mitigation of seismic risk.
