Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

USGS Research Geophysicist Positon, Menlo Park, CA

Date: 06/06/2014

Forwarded job announcement from Fred Pollitz, USGS:

Dear SCEC Community,

The U.S. Geological Survey invites applications for the position of Research Geophysicist in the Earthquake Science Center, Menlo Park, CA.  The mission of the Earthquake Science Center is to conduct basic and applied research on earthquakes, especially as related to quantifying seismic hazard and mitigating the effects of earthquakes in the United States and elsewhere.

The successful applicant will conduct research in crustal deformation, with an emphasis on using GNSS and other data to develop quantitative models of the actively deforming parts of the Western US.  However, the incumbent’s expertise in crustal deformation may be applied wherever this expertise contributes to the USGS earthquake loss reduction mission.

Specific job duties will include:

• creating and refining algorithms that utilize real-time GNSS data for Earthquake Early Warning and improved post-earthquake situational awareness,
• developing approaches to quantify uncertainties and trade-offs among estimated deformation parameters arising both from model assumptions and data errors, and
• applying these approaches and cutting edge computational methods both to improve deformation monitoring and assessment of earthquake likelihood as well as to conduct basic research that contributes to a holistic understanding of crustal deformation processes throughout the earthquake cycle.

This is a full-time permanent position to be filled as a Research Geophysicist, GS-1313-13 with a promotion potential of GS-15.  The vacancy is open from June 9, 2014 – June 27, 2014 and can be viewed on the USA Jobs website (http://www.usajobs.gov) under job announcement number PAC-2014-0528.

We welcome applications from all qualified individuals.  Please follow instructions in the Vacancy Announcement regarding how to apply.  Resumes must include detailed information for current and past positions: job title, name of company/agency, month/yr to month/yr, (e.g., March 2012 – June 2013), number of hours worked per week, salary, supervisor’s name and contact information (can include statement, “can call/do not call/contact me before calling,”) and narrative (not bullet list) of duties, responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and abilities.  We suggest a resume of at least two pages with at least half a page devoted to each position.  All supporting documentation requested in the Vacancy Announcement must be received by the vacancy closing date.  U. S. citizenship is required.  The Federal Government is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Sincerely,

Fred Pollitz
