1.SURE Undergraduate Intern Program

Dear SCEC Colleagues,

The recruitment season for the 2015 SCEC Undergraduate Intern Program is underway! Please share the attached flyer with your students and colleagues.

Please note that the SCEC UseIT program will not be offered in summer 2015. The program will resume in 2016. The SCEC SURE program will be held as planned.

The priority application deadline is Monday February 23rd so please have your students apply soon. If they miss the deadline they will still be considered but being in the priority group is definitely an advantage. Information about the program and the application is found at: www.scec.org/internships

We are also in need of mentors for the SCEC SURE program. If you are interested and have a project please contact Bob de Groot (degroot@usc.edu) to discuss. If you would like to submit a project immediately you can find a link from the homepage of your SCEC CIS account.

2. SSA Award Nominations

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to bring to your attention that the 2015 nomination deadline for several SSA awards is February 15. With the deadline fast approaching, those interested in submitting nominations are encouraged to begin assembling packages now.  The web page describing the SSA awards and nomination process is here:

There are awards for:

- outstanding contributions in seismology and earthquake engineering

- outstanding contributions to the goals of the Society by a member early in her or his career

- outstanding work that serves the profession of seismology or the advancement of public safety or public information relating to seismology

-  outstanding contributions to the work of SSA

Please consider organizing a nomination for a worthy colleague.

With apologies for multiple posting and thanks,
Jessica Murray, Honors Committee Chair

3. Workshop on Numerical Modeling of Earthquake Motions: Waves and Ruptures

Workshop on Numerical Modeling of Earthquake Motions: Waves and Ruptures will be held July 5-9, 2015, at the Smolenice Castle in Slovakia. “The aim of the workshop is to share recent advances in the modeling of earthquake rupture and ground motion, and to investigate how the physical processes associated with earthquakes can be inferred from observations.”

For the most up-to-date information about the workshop please look at the website:

Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation travel funds are available for US participants to attend the workshop. While the distribution of funds will be equitably distributed based on costs, the NSF strongly encourages early career scientists and those who will foster diversity to apply for travel funds.

Deadline for applying for travel support is March 16, 2015. Decisions about travel support will be made by April 1, 2015. Please check the website for important dates about refunds.

To apply for travel support, please send an email (please put "Waves and Ruptures" into the email subject line) to Ralph Archuleta (ralph.archuleta@ucsb.edu) providing the following information:

• Name:

• Email:

• Address of Department and University/College or other:

• Current position (graduate student, postdoc, researcher, assistant professor, etc.):

• Approximate (or exact) airfare:

• Approximate title of presentation:

• One paragraph describing what would be presented. Most presentations will be posters.

Only those persons who plan to stay for the entire workshop will receive travel support. Travel support can only be provided to persons associated with a US-based organization (university, agency, etc.)

Registration covers your food plus coffee breaks plus other nice features of the workshop. Rooms are paid for when arriving at the workshop. The rate per night is very reasonable. Please note that Smolenice Castle has very few single rooms. The Local Organizing Committee will make room assignments.

Ralph Archuleta
Co-Chair of the Steering Committee

Peter Moczo
Chair of the Local Organizing Committee

4. UNAVCO Internships

Hello SCEC community

UNAVCO’s Education and Community Engagement division has five internships available this spring and/or summer for graduate students or advanced undergraduates. Each of them require a robust but varying combination of science and communication skills.
Please help spread the word with students and colleagues about these internship opportunities!
APPLICATIONS at the UNAVCO Careers site (flyer attached below)

Available Intern Opportunities - DEADLINE MARCH 2 (except TLS which is FEB 2)
Internships are for summer 2015 except TLS which could be spring or summer
• UNAVCO Geo-Outreach Specialist/Video & Other Media (2 position)
• UNAVCO Education and Community Engagement Specialist (3 positions)
• Terrestrial Laser Scanning (ECE-TLS) [Feb 2 deadline and possible spring start]
• Geodetic Data for Undergraduate Education (ECE-Undergraduate)
• Geo-Workforce (ECE-GW)
I particularly want to draw your attention to the TLS and Geodetic Data internships as they are probably most appropriate for students with technical data skills.
• TLS internship will have students working with TLS data and techniques to support teaching TLS at field camps
• Geodetic Data internship will have students processing InSAR, LiDAR, and GIS data for use in undergraduate curriculum
