Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

PhD scholarship in New Zealand

Date: 05/19/2017

On Behalf of Yoshi Kaneko, GNS:
---------------------------------------------

We seek a highly motivated student for a 3-year PhD scholarship on the earthquake behaviour of the Hikurangi subduction megathrust as part of a larger project. This project aims to use new seismic data and numerical simulations of seismic wave propagation techniques to understand the mechanisms controlling complex mega-thrust slip behaviour at the Hikurangi subduction plate boundary in New Zealand. The student project will include fieldwork for new seismometer deployment, running numerical simulations of seismic wave propagation, and interpreting observations and model results. While the project will initially focus on fieldwork and observational seismology, there will be opportunities to work on theoretical problems related to earthquake source dynamics and fault mechanics.

The student will be expected to enrol as a PhD student at Victoria University of Wellington and will be supervised by Yoshi Kaneko (GNS Science) and John Townend (Victoria University). GNS Science is a government-owned institution undertaking research in the Earth Sciences and related disciplines.

Prospective candidates must have a strong background in geophysics, physics, engineering, or a related discipline, be proficient in one or more scientific programming languages (Matlab, Python, Fortran, etc.), and have completed a Master’s or equivalent degree. Full details of Victoria University’s eligibility criteria are available from the Faculty of Graduate Research website and http://www.vuw.ac.nz/fgr. A generous scholarship will be provided.

Applications including an up-to-date curriculum vitae and evidence of previous study should be submitted via the Faculty of Graduate Research website (http://www.vuw.ac.nz/fgr) by 1 July 2017. The start date is flexible but will be no later than 1 April 2018. Please direct all questions to:
